BOOKOFF is a Japanese reuse retailer best known for its secondhand books, but its business now extends far beyond books. The company traces its origins to the opening of the first BOOKOFF store in Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture, in 1990. Bookoff Corporation was established the following year. Its founding idea was to make used books easier to buy and sell through clean stores, organized shelves, and clearly displayed prices, rather than treating secondhand shopping as a specialist activity.
BOOKOFF buys items from customers and resells them after inspection and sorting. Its original inventory consisted mainly of Japanese books and magazines, including novels, manga, reference books, and textbooks. The chain later added audio CDs, DVDs, video games, game consoles, and other media. Larger formats, including BOOKOFF SUPER BAZAAR, sell additional categories such as clothing, household goods, sporting equipment, musical instruments, toys, and electronics. This expansion transformed BOOKOFF from a used-book chain into a broad reuse business.
A central feature of the company is its store-based purchasing system. Customers can bring unwanted goods to a nearby shop, where employees assess condition, demand, and resale suitability. Items accepted for sale receive prices according to the company’s operating standards, while damaged or unsuitable products may be declined. The same shops therefore function as both retail stores and collection points, encouraging customers to return repeatedly as buyers and sellers.
BOOKOFF has also developed online sales and services alongside its physical locations. Its corporate group operates several related retail formats, including HOBBY OFF for hobbies and collectibles, HARD OFF for appliances, computers, musical instruments, and other hardware, and OFF HOUSE for household goods and clothing. These brands are distinct from BOOKOFF itself but reflect the group’s wider specialization in reuse.
The company’s history is notable because it helped normalize secondhand shopping in Japan through a recognizable national chain. Instead of relying only on rare finds or specialist knowledge, customers could visit familiar stores with standardized merchandising and predictable categories. BOOKOFF’s shelves also give used media a long commercial life: older manga series, out-of-print books, previous-generation games, and discontinued music can remain available after ordinary retailers stop carrying them. Its identity consequently rests on a practical cycle of circulation—customers release possessions, stores inspect and organize them, and new owners purchase them at lower prices. That combination of resale, accessibility, and nationwide familiarity defines BOOKOFF’s place in Japan’s retail landscape.
