تحرير المرجع

TransUnion is a Chicago-based information and insights company whose history began outside traditional credit reporting. In 1968, Union Tank Car Company created TransUnion as a holding company during a period of diversification. The business entered consumer information services in 1969 by acquiring the Credit Bureau of Cook County, giving it a foundation in local credit records. It later expanded through acquisitions, including Chilton Corporation, and developed into one of the three large nationwide consumer reporting agencies in the United States, alongside Equifax and Experian.

TransUnion collects and analyzes information used by lenders, insurers, landlords, employers, telecommunications companies, and other businesses when they evaluate risk or verify identity. Its consumer reports can include payment histories, account balances, credit limits, collection accounts, and public-record information where legally permitted. The company also provides people with access to their credit information and tools intended to help them understand or monitor it.

A notable TransUnion product is CreditVision, introduced in 2013. Rather than relying only on a traditional snapshot of a person's current credit position, CreditVision uses trended data to show how balances, payments, and account behavior have changed over time. This approach was designed to help lenders assess applicants who might be overlooked by conventional scoring models, including consumers with limited or recently rebuilt credit histories.

TransUnion is also connected to VantageScore, a credit-scoring model created in 2006 by a joint venture of TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian. VantageScore was developed to provide a consistent scoring methodology across the three bureaus, although lenders decide independently which scores and data they use.

The company became publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol TRU in 2015. Its expansion has increasingly included fraud prevention, identity verification, marketing data, and communications intelligence, rather than credit files alone. In December 2021, TransUnion completed its acquisition of Neustar, a Virginia-based company known for identity resolution, caller authentication, and telecommunications data services, in a transaction valued at approximately $3.1 billion.

TransUnion's role has therefore evolved from a regional credit bureau acquired by a diversified transportation holding company into a global data business. Its influence is practical and sometimes consequential: information associated with its databases can affect whether someone receives a loan, qualifies for an apartment, obtains insurance, or passes an identity check. Because errors can carry those consequences, consumers can dispute inaccurate information in their TransUnion credit files, and the company operates within regulatory frameworks governing consumer reporting, privacy, accuracy, and permissible use.
