Gen Con is an annual tabletop gaming convention founded in 1968, when Gary Gygax organized the Lake Geneva Wargames Convention in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. The event initially centered on miniature wargaming, reflecting the hobby that shaped Gygax's early career and led to Dungeons & Dragons. Its name came from Geneva, Wisconsin, rather than from a fictional setting. Over time, Gen Con expanded beyond historical and fantasy miniatures to include role-playing games, board games, collectible card games, trading card tournaments, live-action role-playing, costume events, seminars, and an exhibit hall. The convention therefore became a meeting place for many creators and players.
Gen Con's early location was Lake Geneva, where it used venues including Horticultural Hall. It later moved to other Wisconsin sites as attendance grew. In 1985, TSR, the Wisconsin-based publisher of Dungeons & Dragons, acquired Gen Con, linking the convention to role-playing gaming history. When Wizards of the Coast purchased TSR in 1997, Gen Con became part of Wizards' portfolio. Wizards sold the convention to Peter Adkison, a Wizards co-founder, in 2002. In 2003, Gen Con moved from Milwaukee to Indianapolis, Indiana, its home. It now operates at the Indiana Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium, supporting its wide-ranging program.
Gen Con Indianapolis has repeatedly set attendance records. The 2023 convention reported more than 70,000 unique attendees, while its 2024 event drew more than 70,000 people again, according to organizer announcements. Those figures describe unique participants across the convention, not simply the number of tickets scanned at activities. Gen Con's schedule is built around thousands of events, including tournaments, play sessions, workshops, seminars, costume contests, and author or designer appearances. Attendees can register for specific games and activities through the event catalog, while publishers use the exhibit hall to announce products and demonstrate upcoming releases. The convention hosts charity auctions.
Gen Con's importance is visible in the way it helped make tabletop gaming a public, commercial, and social culture. Its history traces a direct line from Gygax's wargame gatherings to the modern convention model used by thousands of players, designers, publishers, and fans. Gen Con has also preserved its connection to original play: the convention continues to schedule historical miniatures and role-playing sessions alongside newer board and card games. Its Indianapolis edition is not merely a trade show; it is an enormous temporary community organized around participation. From its Wisconsin beginnings through changes in ownership, location, and scale, Gen Con remains identifiable by a simple continuity: people gathering to play games in person.
