Dark Fortress would fit best in Rakdos (black‑red) decks that are either aggressive or midrange and want early color fixing without paying life, especially in formats where you consistently control a basic land (like Swamp or Mountain) or can reliably use the turn it enters to get colored mana; it’s most appealing in Standard‑ or Pioneer‑style mana bases that aren’t fully optimized with premium duals. However, in most competitive environments there are stronger options: Blackcleave Cliffs is better for aggressive decks because it reliably provides untapped BR early, Blightstep Pathway offers consistent color choice without conditions, Haunted Ridge is stronger in midrange builds, and Blood Crypt is generally superior due to always providing both colors at the cost of 2 life.
