One Piece

One Piece is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. It began serialization in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump on July 22, 1997, and follows Monkey D. Luffy, a young pirate whose body gained rubber-like properties after he ate a Devil Fruit. Luffy sets out to find the legendary treasure called the “One Piece” and become King of the Pirates, a title once held by Gol D. Roger. The story opens in East Blue, where Luffy recruits swordsman Roronoa Zoro, navigator and thief Nami, sharpshooter Usopp, and cook Sanji. Their ship, the Going Merry, carries them into the Grand Line, an ocean route divided by dangerous weather, powerful pirate crews, and islands with distinct governments and cultures. Later members of the Straw Hat Pirates include doctor Tony Tony Chopper, archaeologist Nico Robin, shipwright Franky, musician Brook, and helmsman Jinbe. A central mystery concerns the Void Century, a lost period of history that the World Government has prohibited scholars from researching. Robin can read Poneglyphs, ancient stone inscriptions that preserve information from that era. Some Poneglyphs are Road Poneglyphs, whose locations are needed to identify Laugh Tale, the island where Roger's crew reached the One Piece. Robin's ability makes her a target of the government, particularly after the destruction of her home island, Ohara. Luffy's crew repeatedly confronts the World Government and its institutions. At Enies Lobby, the Straw Hats declare war on the government to rescue Robin from CP9. At Marineford, Luffy tries to save his brother Portgas D. Ace, the commander of the Whitebeard Pirates, from execution. Ace dies protecting Luffy during the war, and the conflict also ends with the death of Edward Newgate, known as Whitebeard. Oda structured the manga around long story arcs, including Alabasta, Skypiea, Water 7, Thriller Bark, Sabaody Archipelago, Dressrosa, Whole Cake Island, Wano Country, and Egghead. The Wano arc reveals that the Devil Fruit Luffy ate is the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, rather than the Gum-Gum Fruit as previously believed. Its awakening gives Luffy his Gear Fifth form. The manga has been adapted into a long-running television anime produced by Toei Animation, which premiered in 1999. It has also inspired films, video games, novels, merchandise, and a live-action television adaptation released by Netflix in 2023. One Piece is among the best-selling manga series in history, with its longevity, serialized mysteries, and extensive world-building making it a defining work of modern shonen manga.
