Goodman Games is an American tabletop role-playing game publisher founded by Joseph Goodman in 2001. Its best-known creation, Dungeon Crawl Classics, began as a line of adventures for the third edition of Dungeons & Dragons before becoming a stand-alone role-playing game. That progression captures a distinctive part of the company’s history: it moved from producing material for an existing rules system to building a recognizable game around the style of those adventures.
The early Dungeon Crawl Classics modules evoked older fantasy gaming through perilous dungeons, numbered titles, and cover art reminiscent of classic adventure books. The first entry, Idylls of the Rat King, introduced the line. Other Goodman Games releases from its d20 era included DragonMech, a fantasy setting in which giant mechanical constructs figure prominently, and Xcrawl, which treats dungeon expeditions as televised competitive entertainment. Those projects show that the publisher’s catalog was not limited to conventional underground monster hunts.
Published in 2012, the Dungeon Crawl Classics Role Playing Game gave the adventure line its own rules. It draws inspiration from the “Appendix N” reading list in the original Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Dungeon Masters Guide, including the stranger, less predictable strains of fantasy fiction. One signature procedure is the “funnel”: players begin with several randomly generated zero-level characters, and survivors may advance to first level. The game also uses an unusual “dice chain” with such dice as d3, d5, d7, d14, d16, d24, and d30. Warriors have Mighty Deeds of Arms, while wizardly magic can involve spellburn, corruption, and patron relationships. These mechanics make the game’s old-school aesthetic concrete rather than merely decorative.
Goodman Games extended that rules family with Mutant Crawl Classics, a science-fantasy game by Jim Wampler featuring post-apocalyptic exploration, mutations, and technology. It also continued issuing adventures for Dungeon Crawl Classics, maintaining the numbered-module tradition associated with its earliest success.
Another major publishing project is Original Adventures Reincarnated, a series revisiting celebrated Dungeons & Dragons adventures. Into the Borderlands brings together B1 In Search of the Unknown and B2 The Keep on the Borderlands; subsequent volumes include The Isle of Dread and Expedition to the Barrier Peaks. The books combine reproductions of material with new fifth-edition adaptations and historical commentary. Rather than simply trading on nostalgia, they document the older adventures while making them playable under fifth-edition rules.
Across these lines, the company’s identifiable contribution is the sustained revival and reinterpretation of early tabletop fantasy adventure design.
