LEGO is a Danish toy company headquartered in Billund, where Ole Kirk Christiansen founded the business in 1932. Christiansen, a carpenter, initially made wooden household goods and toys; the company adopted the name LEGO in 1934, derived from the Danish phrase “leg godt,” meaning “play well.” The word also happens to resemble the Latin verb meaning “I put together,” although LEGO says that coincidence was not the original basis for the name. Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, Ole Kirk’s son, helped shape the company’s modern direction and became managing director in 1958. The company’s decisive transition from wood to plastic began after LEGO acquired an injection-molding machine in 1947. It introduced automatic binding bricks in 1949, and the interlocking principle used today was secured by a Danish patent filed in 1958. That year’s redesign placed tubes inside the bricks, improving clutch power while preserving compatibility across generations. LEGO’s central promise became the “LEGO System in Play,” formally presented in 1955: different sets were designed as parts of one coherent building system rather than isolated toys. This backward and forward compatibility remains a defining technical feature of the product. Several product lines became landmarks. DUPLO, launched in 1969, offered larger bricks for younger children while remaining compatible with standard LEGO bricks. LEGO introduced the first modern minifigure, with movable limbs and a printed face, in 1978; the earliest figures appeared in Town, Castle, and Space sets. The Technic line began in 1977 as Expert Builder, emphasizing beams, gears, axles, and functional mechanisms. LEGO also expanded through themed storytelling: LEGO Pirates arrived in 1989, LEGO Mindstorms in 1998, and NINJAGO debuted in 2011 before becoming a major multimedia franchise. LEGO Ideas, originally launched as LEGO CUUSOO, lets fans submit concepts for possible production. LEGO’s best-known physical attraction, LEGOLAND Billund, opened in 1968 beside the original factory. The company later licensed or developed LEGOLAND parks internationally, while its education division supplies programmable and classroom-focused products. In the early 2000s, LEGO faced a severe financial crisis caused by excessive product complexity, rising costs, and weak performance; Jørgen Vig Knudstorp became chief executive in 2004 and led a restructuring centered on core products, profitability, and closer customer insight. Today, the LEGO Group remains controlled through the Kirk Kristiansen family’s holding and foundation structures. Its enduring identity rests not on one theme, but on a patented interlocking brick, a carefully maintained system, and an unusually long record of compatibility worldwide.
