Can Cling to Dust be an option in Modern?

This time we will comment on a CMC 1 card that may enter the position of already known Modern and/or Pioneer staples.

We're here once again to comment on the Theros Beyond Death spoilers. [link](https://cardsrealm.com/artigos/testing-heliod-sun-crowned-combo-in-modern)(In the last article about the new edition we commented on Heliod, Sun-Crowned combo decks), This time we will comment on a CMC 1 card that may enter the position of already known Modern and/or Pioneer staples. [image](https://cardsrealm.com/images/cartas/en/thb-theros-beyond-death-cling-to-dust-87.jpg) [card](Cling to Dust) is a 1-mana black instant that allows you to exile a card from a graveyard, if it is a creature, you gain 3 life; Any other kind, you draw a card. It also has escape, exiling 5 cards and paying 4 mana. *WHY [card](CLING TO DUST) IS A GOOD CARD? * Drawing one card for 1 black mana is not new to Magic. We had the following cards with similar texts: [card](Aphotic Wisps), [card](Cremate), [card](Nighthaze) and [card](Foulmire Knight // Profane Insight). Wizards of the Coast seems to realize that these cards have never seen a game and decided to give steroids to the new spoiler: they added the escape mechanic and gave the new card an important versatility. * Card advantage *: Mostly [card](Cling to Dust) is a 1 to 1 trade, but there is a possibility, when there are mana and cards in the graveyard, that it will be 2 to 1. Make no mistake, many Modern games are resolved before you can use escape, I would say that this card advantage is not ideal, but it does exist. * Life gain *: Earning 3 life by exiling a creature is the worst ability of this card, but it is a possibility that depending on the game is important. Against Burn or extremely aggressive decks, this card is a counter to [card](Lightning Bolt) for only 1 mana. *Gravehate*: Graveyard disruption for only 1 card is not ideal, but can win you games. Exiling the [card](Snapcaster Mage) target can win you matches against control. Other targets: Exile [card](Sword of the Meek) to prevent Simic Whirza's combo; exiling an artifact can end [card](Traverse the Ulvenwald) delirium against a Death's Shadow; exile a [card](Conflagrate) or [card](Creeping Chill) against dredge among other options ... *Can be played from the graveyard *: Being discarded does not lose 100% of its value. Decks that play with their graveyard like Mardu Pyromancer can take advantage of this card. * Storm Counter *: Again I will use Mardu Pyromancer as an example: the deck wants to play a lot of spells to create token. [card](Cling to Dust) can be played 2 times if you have enough mana. Remember that Escape is cast! At worst [card](Cling to Dust) can be cycled. We're talking about the Modern format, reigned by fetchlands from both your deck and your opponent's deck. * WHICH CARDS COMPETE WITH [card](CLING TO DUST)? * We thought in: [card](Opt), [card](Serum Visions) or [card](Hieroglyphic Illumination). [image](https://cardsrealm.com/images/cartas/en/xln-ixalan-opt-65.jpg) [image](https://cardsrealm.com/images/cartas/en/mm3-modern-masters-2017-serum-visions-49.jpg) [image](https://cardsrealm.com/images/cartas/en/akh-amonkhet-hieroglyphic-illumination-57.jpg) The three cards represent Card Advantage or Card Selection in Blue. Many professionals consider scry 1 to be draw 0.5. Therefore, in their view, [card](Opt) is draw 1.5 card instant, [card](Serum Visions) is draw 2 cards sorcery. [card](Hieroglyphic Illumination) is very similar to [card](Cling to Dust), just cycling at the beginning of the game but evolving to a card advantage at the end. [image](https://cardsrealm.com/images/cartas/en/mh1-modern-horizons-ransack-the-lab-103.jpg) We're even seeing [card](Ransack the Lab) being played [link](https://cardsrealm.com/decks/search?format=Modern&last_change=1&tag=metagame&cards=%5B20601%5D&)(in 5-0 Mardu lists in Modern). Two mana for 1 draw and a little more depending on how your deck was built. *DECKS WITH [card](CLING TO DUST) * * Grixis Control * Recently, a [link](https://cardsrealm.com/decks/1cgf-nextep-competitive-constructed-league)(Grixis Control made 5-0 in MTGO), I decided to remove the 2 [card](Into the Story) and 1 [card](Murderous Rider // Swift End) to put 3 [card](Cling to Dust) in place. [card](Drown in the Loch) does not compete directly with [card](Cling to Dust) since Cling to Dust can target his owner graveyard. [deck](27104) *Mardu Pyromancer* Another deck that has already been mentioned here: Mardu Pyromancer. [link](https://cardsrealm.com/decks/1dn4-salty12za-competitive-constructed-league)(We saw another 5-0 list in MTGO) and replaced the 3 [card](Ransack the Lab) with 3 [card](Cling to Dust). I see a lot of synergy in this deck! [deck](27105) *Doesn't agree or we lost something about this card? You can comment that we will respond! *

Decks with Heliod, Sun-Crowned combo in Modern

The Theros Beyond Death spoilers are nowhere near the end, but we have already seen some rare and mythical cards from the upcoming January 24 release. This week it became obvious the community buzz about the White God [card](Heliod, Sun-Crowned), the new card can create a combo that only needs 2 cards: itself and [card](Walking Ballista). [image](https://cardsrealm.com/images/cartas/en/thb-theros-beyond-death-heliod-sun-crowned-18.jpg) [image](https://cardsrealm.com/images/cartas/en/aer-aether-revolt-walking-ballista-181.jpg) Did you notice the combo? [card](Heliod, Sun-Crowned) manages to give lifelink to [card](Walking Ballista) for 2 mana, so for each counter you remove from the ballista to deal 1 direct damage to your opponent, you also gain 1 life. [card](Heliod, Sun-Crowned)'s ability also allows you to put 1 +1/+1 counter on a creature each time you gain life, so for each damage the ballista pings, you can put an additional counter +1/+1 on it, that can be removed to deal more damage, becoming an infinite combo that allows you to gain infinite life and deal infinite damage to target opponent. Interesting no? Before in an article, [link](https://cardsrealm.com/artigos/differences-between-deck-combos-requiring-2-cards-and-3)(I explained the difference between 2-cards combos to 3-cards). On decks with 2-card combos, we have a nearly 50% chance of finding the combo in up to 7 draws, while on 3-card combos, the probability drops to 10%. Of course, redundancy in the combo allows you to change these odds, so we'll present Modern decks here with the combo of the moment trying to produce a lot of redundancy! * MONO-WHITE SOUL SISTER * It's been over 6 months since a soul sister deck has appeared on the metagame! But recently, last month, [link](https://cardsrealm.com/decks/13og-teteteshi1986-competitive-constructed-league)(we saw a deck) with [card](Martyr of Sands) doing 5-0 at MTGO . The deck is simple and straightforward, intended to get over 30 life to activate [card](Serra Ascendant) ability and create a significant clock in the opponent. As Heliod trigger ability works for each life gain, I changed [card](Martyr of Sands) for the soul sisters: [card](Soul Warden) and [card](Soul's Attendant) who can become a [card]( Ajani's Pridemate) with [card](Heliod, Sun-Crowned) in the battlefield. [deck](26647) The deck tutors the combo with [card](Ranger-Captain of Eos) that can get [card](Walking Ballista) when it enters the battlefield. The deck have a midrange stance, but with a 2-card combo that can win the game at any time and with cards that have extreme synergy with each other on the deck. * SELESNYA DEVOTED HELIOD * The other option we see with Heliod is to insert it into a familiar and already strong deck in Modern format: Devoted Druid! [link](https://cardsrealm.com/decks/1cgm-killersuv-competitive-constructed-league)(We made some changes to this 5-0 list here). [deck](26649) The old deck already had a combo: [card](Walking Ballista) + [card](Devoted Druid) + [card](Vizier of Remedies); so Ballista was already naturally entering the deck. The combo has the advantage of being protected by [card](Giver of Runes) and having many tutors: [card](Finale of Devastation), [card](Eladamri's Call), [card](Ranger-Captain of Eos) and [card](Once Upon a Time). * Have we missed any decks on which [card](Heliod, Sun-Crowned) can shine? Comment and let's add here in the article! *
