Castle Combo is a tableau-building card game designed by Grégory Grard and published by Catch Up Games. It was released in 2024, with artwork by Stéphane Escapa. The game is built for two to five players, and a session is generally advertised as lasting about 25 minutes. Rather than presenting a broad medieval campaign, Castle Combo focuses on constructing a compact community from a limited set of character cards.
Each player develops a personal tableau made from two rows: the upper row represents the castle, while the lower row represents the surrounding town. Cards are selected from one of two available markets, and every card has a cost, a point value, and an effect. The central decision is not simply choosing the card with the highest printed value. Players must manage money, connect cards through their placement requirements, and assemble combinations whose effects support the rest of the tableau.
The game’s cards belong to different social and occupational roles, including figures associated with the castle and the town. Their powers can provide resources, modify scoring, trigger effects based on neighboring cards, or reward particular symbols and conditions. Since the tableau is limited in size, an apparently useful card can become awkward if it occupies a space needed for a later combination. The two-row structure therefore gives placement a direct strategic consequence: a card’s location matters as much as its individual ability.
A distinctive feature of Castle Combo is its shared card-market system. The available cards change as players take them, so players must weigh immediate opportunities against the possibility that a desired combination will disappear. The game also includes a public display of character cards and a mechanism that replenishes the markets, keeping the decision space in motion throughout the game. This creates interaction without requiring direct attacks between players.
The game ends after each player has completed a twelve-card tableau. Players then score their cards, including printed points and bonuses generated by card effects and completed conditions. The winner is the player with the highest total score.
Castle Combo is notable for compressing familiar engine-building and tableau-combination ideas into a short card game with a clearly defined spatial puzzle. Its theme is expressed through the division between castle and town, while its core appeal comes from discovering efficient relationships among twelve individually chosen characters. Catch Up Games positions it as a concise strategy game rather than a narrative adventure: the “castle combo” is the player’s constructed scoring network, not a prewritten story or campaign.
