BioWare is a video game developer founded in 1995 in Edmonton, Alberta, by doctors Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk, and Augustine Yip. The three founders met while studying medicine at the University of Alberta and began making games after graduating. Their first release, *Shattered Steel* (1996), was a science-fiction combat game in which players piloted a walking tank called a HERC. Its destructible terrain and deformable enemies helped distinguish it from other action games of the period.
BioWare became widely known for role-playing games. *Baldur’s Gate* (1998), developed with publisher Interplay, brought Dungeons & Dragons rules and the Forgotten Realms setting to a computer role-playing game built around a party of adventurers. Its success led to *Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn* (2000), which expanded the story of the protagonist, a child of the murdered god Bhaal, and their companions. The games helped establish BioWare as a major developer of computer RPGs.
The studio continued adapting established fictional worlds. *Neverwinter Nights* (2002) used Dungeons & Dragons’ third-edition rules and included tools that let players create their own adventures. *Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic* (2003), set thousands of years before the films, follows a former Sith Lord who has lost their memory and becomes central to a conflict between the Republic and the Sith. Players’ decisions shape the character’s relationships and eventual alignment.
BioWare’s original science-fiction series, *Mass Effect*, began in 2007. It follows Commander Shepard, a human officer who investigates the return of the Reapers, ancient machines that threaten advanced civilizations. The trilogy carried characters and selected player decisions across its three main installments. The studio also created the fantasy series *Dragon Age*. Its first game, *Dragon Age: Origins* (2009), centers on a war against the darkspawn and the Grey Wardens, an order sworn to oppose them. Later games, including *Dragon Age: Inquisition* (2014), developed the setting of Thedas through new protagonists and political conflicts.
Electronic Arts acquired BioWare in 2007. The studio released *Anthem* in 2019, a shared-world action game set on a dangerous planet where players pilot powered exosuits called Javelins. In 2023, BioWare announced that development of its next *Mass Effect* game was continuing while the studio focused on *Dragon Age: The Veilguard*, released in 2024. Across its history, BioWare has worked in both licensed settings and original worlds, often emphasizing party-based storytelling, character relationships, and player choices.
