White Wolf Publishing was an American role-playing game company founded in 1991 by brothers Steve and Stewart Wieck. The company emerged from the fandom surrounding *White Wolf Magazine*, which began publication in 1986 and later became *White Wolf Inphobia*. Its best-known achievement was the creation of the World of Darkness, a shared setting of modern supernatural fiction presented through tabletop role-playing games.
The first major World of Darkness title was *Vampire: The Masquerade*, released in 1991. Designed primarily by Mark Rein-Hagen, the game portrayed vampires organized into competing clans and political factions while hiding their existence from humanity. Its emphasis on personal horror, social conflict, and narrative play helped distinguish it from fantasy games centered mainly on tactical combat. White Wolf followed it with *Werewolf: The Apocalypse* in 1992, *Mage: The Ascension* in 1993, *Wraith: The Oblivion* in 1994, and *Changeling: The Dreaming* in 1995. These games shared a setting and timeline, allowing characters and themes to cross between product lines.
White Wolf also published the *Exalted* role-playing game, launched in 2001. Set in a mythic world influenced by epic fantasy and East Asian storytelling, *Exalted* used a different setting from the World of Darkness and became one of the company’s prominent original properties. The company released numerous rulebooks, fiction anthologies, and licensed adaptations, building a substantial catalog around its settings.
In October 2006, Icelandic video-game developer CCP announced an agreement to acquire White Wolf. The companies later worked on a planned massively multiplayer online game based on *World of Darkness*, but CCP cancelled the project in 2014 after years of development. That cancellation resulted in layoffs at CCP’s Atlanta studio.
Paradox Interactive announced in October 2015 that it had acquired the White Wolf intellectual property and publishing assets from CCP. Paradox subsequently established White Wolf Entertainment as a separate subsidiary to manage the brand. In 2018, after controversy surrounding insensitive material and public statements connected with *Vampire: The Masquerade* products, Paradox removed White Wolf’s management responsibilities and brought brand oversight directly under Paradox.
White Wolf’s lasting importance rests on its influence over story-focused tabletop design. Its games popularized mechanics and settings that treated character relationships, ethical dilemmas, factional politics, and collaborative storytelling as central play experiences. The World of Darkness line has continued through revised editions, video games, novels, live-action role-playing adaptations, and licensed media, preserving the company’s most recognizable creative legacy.
