Steve Jackson Games is an Austin, Texas, game publisher founded by designer Steve Jackson in 1980, after the collapse of Metagaming Concepts, where Jackson had designed Ogre and The Fantasy Trip. The company’s early identity was built around compact, rules-driven games and a direct relationship with hobby gamers. Ogre, first published in 1977 and later carried forward by Steve Jackson Games, imagines armored “cybertanks” fighting in a future conventional war. Car Wars, introduced in 1981, turns post-apocalyptic road combat into a vehicle-design and tactical board-game system. Illuminati, released in 1982, uses competing conspiratorial groups seeking world control.

In 1986 the company published GURPS, the Generic Universal RolePlaying System, designed by Jackson. Its central promise was portability: players could use a common core rules set for fantasy, science fiction, horror, espionage, historical, and other campaigns. GURPS became one of the firm’s defining lines, supported by numerous worldbooks and licensed settings. Among notable releases were GURPS Cyberpunk, written by Loyd Blankenship, and GURPS Discworld, based on Terry Pratchett’s comic fantasy series. The line’s detailed sourcebooks helped establish Steve Jackson Games as a publisher whose roleplaying material was often read for research as well as played.

Steve Jackson Games also became central to a landmark dispute over computer searches and electronic civil liberties. In 1990, during the Secret Service’s Operation Sundevil investigation, agents raided the company’s offices and seized computers, manuscripts, and electronic mail. The government’s theory connected material in GURPS Cyberpunk to hacking, although the book was a roleplaying-game supplement. With representation associated with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the company sued. A federal court later found violations of the Electronic Communications Privacy Act and awarded damages, making the case an important early Internet-rights precedent.

Commercially, the company’s biggest modern hit has been Munchkin, a humorous card game designed by Steve Jackson and illustrated by John Kovalic. Released in 2001, it parodies dungeon-crawling fantasy roleplaying through “kick down the door” turns, exaggerated equipment, monsters, levels, and opportunities to interfere with opponents. Its success produced many themed editions, expansions, accessories, and crossovers. Steve Jackson Games continues to publish physical games, roleplaying books, and related products from Austin, while maintaining longstanding properties including Ogre, Car Wars, GURPS, and Munchkin. It has also used the Warehouse 23 name for its online store, a reference familiar to fans of its catalog and the company’s playful science-fiction sensibility across decades of publishing, licensing, and product experimentation since then.
