Undaunted: Normandy, published by Osprey Games in 2019, is the first release in the Undaunted board-game series. Designed by David Thompson and Trevor Benjamin, with artwork by Roland MacDonald, it places two players on opposite sides of small-unit engagements following the Allied landings in Normandy in 1944. One player commands American forces; the other commands German defenders. It focuses on squads and contested ground rather than simulating the entire invasion.
Normandy combines deck building with a battlefield assembled from illustrated terrain tiles. Each player’s cards represent soldiers and command options, while pieces on the map show where units stand. Players draw four cards for a round and commit one to determine initiative; the remaining cards provide actions. A favorable position on the board is not enough if the card needed to use a unit does not reach your hand.
The soldiers have distinct jobs. Scouts help units advance into unfamiliar areas and deal with Fog of War cards, which take up space in a deck without providing a normal unit action. Riflemen are important for taking control of territory, while machine gunners can suppress opponents. Leaders can add cards to a player’s deck, expanding the options available in later rounds. Movement, recruitment, and firing must therefore compete for a limited hand. A player deciding whether to reinforce a squad is also deciding which cards may appear in future draws.
Combat connects the battlefield to that deck. Successful attacks can remove cards belonging to the targeted unit, making it harder to activate as losses mount. A unit’s vulnerability is felt both in the immediate fight and in subsequent rounds. Objectives vary across the game’s scenarios, so victory is not simply a matter of eliminating every enemy piece. The scenarios can be played individually or as a campaign following the Normandy fighting. Their changing maps and goals require players to reconsider which ground matters most, even though the core card system remains the same.
The Undaunted name later extended to other conflicts and forms of combat. Undaunted: North Africa, released in 2020, moved to the desert war and introduced vehicles alongside infantry. Undaunted: Stalingrad, released in 2022, featured a campaign in which losses and changes to the battlefield carry forward. Undaunted: Battle of Britain, released in 2023, adapted the card-driven approach to aerial combat. Normandy established the series’ central combination of scenario objectives, terrain, unit-specific cards, and tactical decisions constrained by a shuffled deck.
