Bushiroad is a Japanese entertainment company founded in 2007 by Takaaki Kidani, who had previously helped establish Broccoli, the company behind the multimedia franchise Di Gi Charat. Bushiroad developed a business model that connects trading card games, music, anime, mobile games, live performances, and merchandising rather than treating each medium as a separate market.
Its first major trading card game was Cardfight!! Vanguard, launched in 2011. Created with manga artist Akira Ito and supported by an anime series, the game became one of Bushiroad’s defining properties. The company also operates Weiss Schwarz, a collectible card game that brings together characters from licensed anime, games, and other Japanese entertainment properties. In 2022, Bushiroad and Cygames launched Shadowverse Evolve, a physical trading card game based on Cygames’ digital game Shadowverse.
Bushiroad’s most prominent multimedia project is BanG Dream!, announced in 2015. The franchise follows fictional girls forming bands, while its voice actors perform as real musicians. Poppin’Party, Roselia, Morfonica, RAISE A SUILEN, and other groups have released music and appeared in concerts. BanG Dream! also includes animated series, the smartphone game BanG Dream! Girls Band Party!, and theatrical films. This combination of fictional storytelling and live performance became a central feature of Bushiroad’s strategy.
Other major projects include Revue Starlight, created with Nelke Planning and Kinema Citrus, and D4DJ, a music-focused franchise involving anime, games, and live DJ performances. Bushiroad has also developed the baseball-themed multimedia project From Argonavis and produced the animated series Cardfight!! Vanguard through changing generations and formats.
The company expanded beyond games and anime into professional wrestling. Bushiroad acquired New Japan Pro-Wrestling in 2012, bringing one of Japan’s best-known wrestling promotions into its corporate group. It later acquired World Wonder Ring STARDOM, a leading women’s wrestling organization, in 2019. These promotions have supplied live events, streaming content, merchandise, and cross-promotional opportunities.
Bushiroad’s operations are organized through businesses including Bushiroad Music, Bushiroad Creative, Bushiroad Media, and Bushiroad International, alongside its gaming and sports activities. Its public listing on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 2019 marked another stage in the company’s growth. Bushiroad is therefore notable not simply for individual franchises, but for repeatedly turning character-based properties into connected ecosystems of games, recordings, animation, events, and merchandise.
