In the past era of entertainment, playing cards were central to how people had fun. Over the course of history, a plethora of different games have been invented from a simple deck of cards, including Go Fish, Gin Rummy, Bridge, Solitaire, Blackjack, and Poker; games that involve a diverse range of skills and strategy to emerge victorious.
As we moved towards the 21st century, the concept of playing cards evolved with the release of trading cards. Suddenly, through collecting, swapping, and battling with cards, a new meaning behind the idea of playing cards was created. In 1993, Magic: The Gathering was created by Richard Garfield and is recognised as the first trading card game of its kind in the world. People worldwide were introduced to a multiverse that housed thousands of different characters with varying roles and attributes. From key characters such as Urza, Nicol Bolas, and Yawgmoth, players were also able to collect Planeswalkers to create an army to win a duel.
The turn-taking trading card phenomenon proved an instant hit, and the trading card frenzy was built on just a few years later in 1996 with the release of Pokémon. Although it was not until the end of the 1990’s that Pokémon cards reached the U.S, the arrival of characters such as Pikachu, Squirtle, Bulbasaur and Charmanda cemented the concept of trading cards. The Pokémon frenzy has since led to video games, series, and movies being produced and is still wildly popular with millions around the world that continue to collect and battle with their favourite Pokémon.
Card Game Evolution Goes Full Circle
With trading cards forming the main outlet for card game play from the early 2000’s, the evolution of card games could have stopped there. However, card games have continued to evolve over the past decades and have now arrived at a point where old classics are being reintroduced in different formats and are attracting a new wave of card game enthusiasts.
Currently, we are living amidst a digital transition that is altering consumer behaviour across the planet. In the entertainment industry, former traditional card games are being brought to life in digitised formats that are fitting of an era where digital devices are becoming increasingly essential in everyday life. New forms of online entertainment such as live casino table and card games, which involve blackjack, baccarat, and poker streamed online through live state-of-the-art camera feeds are creating a new generation of card game players that can transition smoothly to the real-time digital environments.
It is not only live casino card games that are proving popular but established titles such as Magic: The Gathering and Pokémon have also been revamped in digital formats to keep pace with societal evolution. And with all card games slowly falling under one digitised roof, the entertainment industry is witnessing more crossover of card players into other types of card game that all occur at real-time speed. Pokémon fans can relate to the turn-taking approach to blackjack and the strategy involved in the game as well as the adaptation and decision making required mid-game. It is these similar game mechanics that allow card players of all games to grasp other games quickly and with added realism brought to game play with live casino for example, there is a greater appeal and a replication of the communal aspect created with physical card play.
With the digital movement, card games from past centuries have been recreated and brought to life in an interactive and innovative way. In a sense, card games have gone full circle in reintroducing old classics into our lives. And there is potential for more crossover in the future.
