About Marchesa's Decree

A deck that focuses on controlling the board and maintaining the monarch status would benefit from Marchesa's Decree, as it provides a constant source of life loss for the opponent's creatures. However, there are potentially better cards like Palace Jailer or Custodi Lich that offer more impactful effects while also granting the monarch status. Marchesa's Decree could see play in a deck looking to chip away at the opponent's life total over time, but there are stronger options available for maintaining monarch status and controlling the battlefield.

Abilities that trigger whenever you “become the monarch” trigger only if you aren’t already the monarch. For example, if you are already the monarch as Custodi Lich enters the battlefield, its last ability won’t trigger.
