High Frontier 4 All is a board game designed by Phil Eklund and published by Sierra Madre Games in 2020. It is the fourth edition of Eklund’s High Frontier design, following earlier editions of High Frontier: The Game of Solar System Exploration. Its subject is not fictional interstellar adventure: the game models travel, technology, resource extraction, and settlement across the real Solar System, using locations and scientific concepts drawn from astronomy and space engineering.

Players operate competing space programs seeking to develop a working industrial presence beyond Earth. The map begins with Earth and low Earth orbit, then extends through cislunar space, the inner planets, the asteroid belt, the outer planets, and distant objects. Routes are represented through a network of burn spaces. Moving a spacecraft is tied to its propulsion capability, fuel requirements, and the changing conditions of Solar System travel rather than to a simple movement allowance.

A central feature is the patent deck. Patents represent possible technologies and are divided into functional components, including thrusters, generators, radiators, refineries, rovers, and other hardware. A player must assemble compatible components into a spacecraft before launching it. The mass, power, cooling, and fuel demands of a design matter, so an apparently powerful engine may be impractical without sufficient supporting equipment. This system makes spacecraft construction a major part of play rather than a preliminary detail.

Water is especially important in High Frontier 4 All. It can be used as propellant, and sites containing accessible water can become strategically valuable. Players prospect locations, establish factories, and attempt to turn extraterrestrial resources into an operational supply network. The game therefore treats the Moon, asteroids, and other bodies not merely as destinations, but as potential sources of materials needed for further expansion.

The game’s Solar System map includes recognizable real destinations such as Mars, Venus, Mercury, the Moon, asteroids, and the moons of the outer planets. It also incorporates orbital mechanics concepts such as gravity assists, aerobraking, and different propulsion methods. Its technology includes real or proposed systems, from chemical rockets and solar sails to nuclear and electric propulsion concepts.

High Frontier 4 All is structured as a modular game. The basic game introduces the essential economic, technological, and exploration systems, while additional modules expand the simulation with more advanced rules and subjects. This format allows a shorter introductory experience while preserving the detailed scope for which the series is known. The game’s presentation emphasizes scientific plausibility, and its rules and card content are intended to connect strategic choices with the physical constraints of spaceflight.
