Edit reference

Star Wars: Legion is a miniatures wargame published by Fantasy Flight Games and released in 2018. Designed by Andrew Fischer and Alex Davy, it places players in command of armies drawn from the Star Wars universe. The original core set presents the Galactic Civil War through a Rebel Alliance force led by Luke Skywalker against an Imperial army commanded by Darth Vader. Each player builds, paints, and deploys detailed plastic miniatures representing commanders, troopers, vehicles, and support units.

The game uses movement tools, range rulers, dice, command cards, and unit cards to resolve battles. Its alternating activation system means players do not simply complete an entire turn with one army before their opponent responds. Instead, units activate one at a time, creating opportunities to seize objectives, concentrate fire, or protect damaged forces. Commanders issue orders through command cards, while the order pool introduces uncertainty about which units can activate freely. Suppression tokens represent battlefield pressure and can reduce a unit’s effectiveness, giving morale a meaningful tactical role.

The initial Imperial and Rebel forces include recognizable units such as Stormtroopers, Rebel Troopers, Scouts, AT-RTs, Speeder Bikes, and the T-47 Airspeeder. Later releases expanded the game beyond the original trilogy conflict. Clone Wars armies introduced the Galactic Republic and Separatist Alliance, with characters including Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, General Grievous, and Count Dooku. The game subsequently added forces and characters connected with Rogue One, The Mandalorian, and other Star Wars eras, including the Galactic Empire’s Director Orson Krennic and the Rebel operative Cassian Andor.

Fantasy Flight Games transferred the Star Wars: Legion license to Atomic Mass Games in 2020. Atomic Mass Games later announced a second edition, with revised rules and updated army-building systems intended to unify the expanding collection of units and factions. Existing miniatures remain usable, although players need the relevant updated rules and cards.

Legion is notable because it combines cinematic Star Wars characters with conventional tabletop military planning. Luke can confront Vader, but victory usually depends on coordinating ordinary soldiers, managing suppression, controlling objectives, and timing special abilities. Its scenarios therefore do not require players to recreate one specific film battle. Instead, the rules provide a framework for creating alternate engagements, such as Rebel forces attacking an Imperial position or Republic clones resisting a Separatist advance. The result is a game whose identity comes from specific Star Wars armies and its detailed command mechanics rather than from a generic science-fiction theme.
