Trail of Cthulhu 2nd Edition is not a conventional board game but a tabletop role-playing game of investigative horror from Pelgrane Press, built on Robin D. Laws’ GUMSHOE system and licensed through Chaosium’s Call of Cthulhu arrangement. Its premise keeps the line’s defining focus: investigators confront H. P. Lovecraft’s Mythos in the anxious 1930s, where clues, forbidden books, cults, and historical unease matter more than tactical board position. The original Trail of Cthulhu appeared in 2008, written by Kenneth Hite, and became Pelgrane’s flagship expression of GUMSHOE’s central idea that mysteries should not stall because a crucial clue is missed.
The second edition was announced by Pelgrane in September 2023, with Kenneth Hite returning and Gareth Ryder-Hanrahan joining him on the revision under publisher Cathriona Tobin. Chaosium later noted that the October 2024 BackerKit campaign reached its £50,000 goal in under four hours, and described the new edition as wholly compatible with the 2008 game. That compatibility is important: it signals revision rather than replacement, allowing long-running scenarios, campaigns, and supplements to remain useful while updating presentation and rules support.
Specific to this edition, Pelgrane’s campaign page highlights three built-in campaign frames designed to give investigators a reason to work together and to keep play moving even after characters die or go insane. One is The Armitage Inquiry, centered on Henry Armitage’s academic circle. Another, Shadows Under Chicago, points toward Prohibition-era urban horror; its unlocked scenario “Singular Thirsts” involves something wrong with bootleg beer in Bucktown. A third, Under Unknown Skies, is tied to Bishop, Oklahoma, and received the planned scenario “A Winding Sheet,” about an unseasonable snowstorm hiding sinister forces.
The crowdfunding materials also name associated products that show the line’s scope: Boundary of the Darkness, an eighteenth-century campaign frame by Phil Masters and Sarah Saltiel involving the Lunar Society, the Bluestockings, and the secret “Friends of Blue”; The Kingsbury Horror; a three-panel GM screen; A3 maps of locations including Chicago and New England; and digital support through Foundry VTT, Roll20, and The Black Book character generator. Stretch material promised Second Edition treatments of Mythos beings including Daoloth, Iod, Mordiggian, Quachil Uttaus, and Y’golonac. It also carries forward Trail’s familiar Purist and Pulp modes, letting groups tune investigations between bleak inevitability and somewhat more action-oriented resilience during sessions. In short, Trail of Cthulhu 2nd Edition preserves Hite’s historical, clue-driven Lovecraftian investigation while broadening onboarding, campaign structure, and play support.
