Edit reference

Cubicle 7 Entertainment is a British tabletop roleplaying-game publisher founded in 2006 and based in Oxford, England. The company became known for building games around established fictional settings, while also publishing original worlds and licensed adaptations. Its catalogue includes roleplaying games, supplements, card games, and board games, but its strongest identity has come from translating recognizable fantasy and science-fiction properties into detailed tabletop systems.

One of Cubicle 7’s earliest major successes was Doctor Who: Adventures in Time and Space, released in 2009. Based on the BBC television series, the game lets players portray the Doctor, companions, and other characters travelling through different historical periods and alien worlds. It uses the Vortex System, a rules framework designed to support investigation, social conflict, time travel, and the Doctor’s preference for solving problems without violence. Cubicle 7 later published Doctor Who roleplaying material covering multiple television eras, including supplements focused on characters, monsters, locations, and specific Doctors.

The company also became closely associated with Middle-earth through The One Ring Roleplaying Game. Designed by Francesco Nepitello and first published in 2011, the game emphasizes journeys, fellowship, discovery, and the gradual spiritual effects of confronting the Shadow. Its setting draws primarily from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Cubicle 7 subsequently published Adventures in Middle-earth, a separate adaptation that brought Middle-earth campaigns to the fifth-edition fantasy roleplaying framework, using new rules for cultures, backgrounds, journeys, and council meetings.

Cubicle 7 revived Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay with its fourth edition in 2018. That game returns players to the perilous Old World, where disease, corruption, social inequality, and grotesque danger are as important as combat. The publisher followed it with adventures and supplements that expand regions, careers, rules, and factions. Its Warhammer line also includes Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soulbound, launched in 2020, which presents heroes defending the Mortal Realms in a more overtly heroic style, and Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay: Wrath & Glory, set in Games Workshop’s grim far-future universe.

Other notable Cubicle 7 releases include Cthulhu Britannica, Rocket Age, The Laundry Files, and World War Cthulhu. These titles show the company’s recurring interest in historical research, literary influences, investigative horror, and genre-specific atmosphere. Across its licensed and original games, Cubicle 7 has established a recognizable publishing approach: take a setting’s distinctive themes seriously, then build mechanics that make those themes central to play rather than treating the license as decoration.
