Pokémon Center is the official retail business associated with The Pokémon Company, selling licensed Pokémon merchandise through physical stores and online shops. Its history began in Japan, where the first Pokémon Center opened in Tokyo’s Nihonbashi district in July 1998. The concept expanded into a national chain designed around the Pokémon games, anime, trading card game, and characters rather than around a single product category.
The original Tokyo store later moved within the city. It operated in Hamamatsuchō before relocating to Sunshine City in Ikebukuro in 2014, where it became Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo. That store’s name references Mega Evolution, a battle mechanic introduced in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. Other major Japanese locations include Pokémon Center Osaka, Pokémon Center Nagoya, Pokémon Center Yokohama, Pokémon Center Kyoto, Pokémon Center Sapporo, and Pokémon Center Fukuoka. The stores commonly carry plush toys, trading cards, figures, stationery, apparel, household goods, and region-specific products.
Pokémon Center locations have also been used for special promotions and limited releases. Japan’s stores have hosted events connected with new game launches, trading card products, and seasonal campaigns. Some merchandise is exclusive to particular stores or to the Pokémon Center brand, making the shops significant destinations for collectors. The stores’ visual designs frequently incorporate local identity; Pokémon Center Kyoto, for example, has used artwork and products connected with traditional Kyoto imagery, while Pokémon Center Hiroshima has featured Pikachu wearing a red carp streamer, referencing Hiroshima’s regional culture.
The brand’s international retail presence developed through temporary and online operations. Pokémon Center opened an online store serving the United States in 2014, offering official merchandise beyond Japan. A United Kingdom online store launched in 2019, and the Pokémon Center website later expanded service to additional European countries. The company has also operated temporary Pokémon Center shops at major events, including locations connected with conventions and the Pokémon World Championships. In 2023, a temporary Pokémon Center opened in London during the Pokémon World Championships held there.
Pokémon Center is distinct from Pokémon-themed attractions such as Pokémon GO events or Pokémon cafés, although these initiatives may share branding and promotional campaigns. Its central role is official merchandise retail: translating the Pokémon intellectual property into physical products, store experiences, and limited campaigns. Through its long-running Japanese chain, international e-commerce, and event-based shops, Pokémon Center has become one of the most visible commercial extensions of the Pokémon franchise.
