Mirrodin Besieged takes place on the plane of Mirrodin, a world of artifice and metal where two factions, the phyrexians and the Mirrans, clash for control. As the phyrexians infect Mirrodin with their corruptive phyresis, players are introduced to new game mechanics such as Battle Cry and Infect. Battle Cry encourages aggressive strategies by boosting creatures' power when they attack, while Infect changes the way damage is dealt by converting it into poison counters that can ultimately defeat a player. Players must choose sides and navigate this war-torn plane using strategic gameplay and unique cards that reflect the ongoing conflict between the Mirrans fighting to preserve their way of life and the phyrexians seeking to dominate Mirrodin with their mechanized horrors.
