The Ruination, Spell, designed by Oliver Chipping first released in Mar, 2026 in the set Unleashed.
The Ruination is best suited for slow control or ramp decks—especially Shadow Isles-based control—that aim to stall the game, exhaust the opponent’s resources, and reset the board before winning with a late-game finisher; it’s particularly strong in metas with wide, unit-heavy strategies because it provides a full board wipe regardless of size or keywords. Compared to alternatives, cheaper partial clears like Avalanche or Withering Wail can be more efficient against aggressive decks, and single-target removal like Vengeance offers better tempo in midrange matchups, while cards like Buried in Ice can function as a one-sided wipe in the right build, making them situationally stronger. Despite the high 9-cost investment, The Ruination should see play in slow control decks that can reliably survive to the late game and don’t rely on maintaining their own board presence, but it’s generally too slow for faster or midrange strategies.
