An interview with Lara Wilson, digital entertainment expert, from Casino.ca
As anyone who loves a pack of cards will testify, one pack of 52 cards can offer endless entertainment opportunities. That is why the format is so enduring. Did you know that from those 52 cards, there are a possible 2,598,690 5-card hands from the first deal? There is no regard for order as a hand is a set and not a sequence, and the possibilities are almost endless (or certainly very large). If you wanted to test the theory, you could sit down with a pen and paper and do the maths. Or you could sit down with a pack of cards and do a lot of dealing.
However, how is that done in the virtual world of online casinos, and how do online casinos mirror traditional card games to make them authentic and fair? We sat down with Lara Wilson, from Casino.ca, to get some inside wisdom.

Hi Lara, thanks for taking the time to come and talk to us. We know a good deal about collector cards here, but less about playing cards and casino card games. So while we are experts on Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and a wide range of board games, your expertise is of a different nature. Can you let us know a little more about yourself before explaining online casino games?
Lara Wilson
Hello, I am Lara Wilson, and my expertise is casino reviews and gambling guides. I'm based near Vancouver, British Columbia, and have over 15 years of experience in the iGaming industry. I have particular expertise in online poker, online casinos, and start-up ventures, but I love the big established online casinos too. My background was in communication and marketing, but I now concentrate on writing detailed casino reviews and gaming guides. When it comes to online card games, the casinos follow the same rules and procedures.

Thanks for that introduction. We are curious about how the online casinos mirror traditional card games. It all feels a bit like magic – although it is probably more about technical wizardry than the abracadabra variety.
Lara Wilson
Yes, no actual magic at all, I am afraid. In your introduction, you talked about probability. It is the same for online games as for physical card games. All casino games, except for poker, are games of chance. While Blackjack betting has a high level of skill, the cards that are dealt are dealt randomly. While there is not a physical pack of cards to be dealt, a random number generator replicates the odds and delivers the same random selection of cards that you would get from a standard deck.

What are the advantages of playing at online casinos?
Lara Wilson
While it can be great fun playing cards in real life with friends or at a land-based casino, it is not always possible. Also, if you want to play for real money, not everyone wants to bet against their friends. One of the huge advantages of playing card games at online casinos is that it opens up a much larger pool of potential opponents. Players can either pit their luck against a video simulation or try their hand at a live-dealer game. Real-money live dealer games are really coming of age at the moment, giving players the full casino experience from the comfort of their own home. They just need a smartphone or tablet and a stable internet connection. They actually play in real time, alongside other players, against a real human dealer. It doesn't get more magical than this!

What are your top tips for people playing card games at online casinos?
Lara Wilson
Well, first things first, players need to find the best sites to play on. As independent reviewers, it is our job to find the best ones. At Casino.ca, we look at a wide range of factors before making any recommendations. We do all the background checks for our users to ensure they are playing on trusted sites that offer great game variety, decent odds, great bonuses, and direct players to online casino options with the fastest withdrawals in Canada. After all, no one wants to be waiting around for their winnings!

Are online card games only suitable for seasoned veterans?
Lara Wilson
Oh no, not at all. There are great options for play at all levels. We aim to provide a range of insights and help players learn which tactics can boost their success. While online casino games are generally games of luck and chance, how you play and bet on them can seriously affect the outcome (and your bankroll). We always recommend a cautious approach – particularly when playing card games and even more so when playing at live-dealer tables.
Players need to know the rules in advance and to have a good understanding of betting strategies. If that all sounds a bit daunting – don't worry, we have plenty of advice and step-by-step guides. However, our advice is that you do not want to be learning 'on the job', so make sure you have time to understand how the game works. As well as guiding players to online casinos, we have plenty of inside advice to take on board before playing for real money. For example, we have a recommended blackjack strategy that can reduce the house edge by 0.5% and earn bigger payouts.
While players have to make decisions on the fly following our blackjack cheat sheet, can help them manage their bankroll and prevent overspending or early burnout. As my colleague, Liam Blackley, says, "The blackjack cheat sheet helps me take the guesswork out of my play for consistent results". A great cheat sheet (like ours) can be read while the game is in progress. The player has to look at which card the dealer has face-up, then check their current card total, find the square where the column and row intersect, and be served up with optimal play based on the current state of the game. It really is as straightforward as that. However, even with cheat sheets and strategies, we still recommend players try out in demo mode before committing to playing with their own money. That way, they can avoid surprises and master the game before placing any bets.

Thank you so much, Lara. That all sounds like very wise advice.
