Bandai is a Japanese toy and entertainment company whose history begins on July 5, 1950, when Naoharu Yamashina established Bandai-ya in Taito, Tokyo. The business initially operated as a wholesaler of toys, but it began producing original items and released its first product, the Rhythm Ball, in 1953. That early shift set its direction toward playthings designed, manufactured, and marketed under its own name. In 1961 the company adopted the name Bandai, drawing on the Chinese expression “bandai fueki,” commonly rendered as “eternally unchanging.” Bandai Co., Ltd. was formally incorporated in 1963, while Yamashina remained central to its formative decades of company history. A defining part of Bandai’s business became character merchandising. It developed toys connected to Japanese television animation and tokusatsu productions, then turned many of those properties into durable product lines. The most influential example is Gunpla, the plastic-model range based on Mobile Suit Gundam. Bandai introduced the first Gundam plastic model in 1980, after the original television series had aired in 1979. The line expanded far beyond a single kit, with scales, grades, special releases, and model-building communities around it. Bandai also made toys for franchises including Kamen Rider, Super Sentai, Dragon Ball, and Sailor Moon, linking collectible goods to serialized screen stories. Bandai achieved another international hit with Tamagotchi, the handheld digital pet launched in Japan in 1996. Users cared for a small on-screen creature by feeding, playing with, and cleaning up after it; the device’s portable format and short feedback cycle became part of its appeal. The product was co-created by Bandai employee Aki Maita and Akihiro Yokoi of WiZ. Tamagotchi became a major cultural phenomenon and has returned in successive editions rather than remaining only a 1990s novelty. In the United States, Bandai America was established in 1978, giving the group a direct presence in a key overseas toy market. A corporate reorganization reshaped Bandai in the twenty-first century. On September 29, 2005, Bandai and Namco combined under the holding company Bandai Namco Holdings Inc. The transaction brought together Bandai’s toy, hobby, and character businesses with Namco’s arcade and video-game heritage. Bandai continues as an operating company within the group, which uses the Bandai Namco name across entertainment activities. Its products include figure lines such as S.H.Figuarts and Ichibansho, trading-card games, candy toys, and capsule-toy items sold under the Gashapon brand. This mix reflects Bandai’s method: extending particular characters and worlds across toys, models, games, and collectibles instead of relying on unbranded merchandise.
