# The Evolution and Operations of McDonald's
McDonald’s began as the McDonald brothers’ barbecue restaurant in San Bernardino, California. In 1948, Richard and Maurice McDonald reopened the business as a streamlined hamburger stand called McDonald’s “Speedee Service System,” introducing a limited menu, assembly-line production, and self-service ordering. Its distinctive golden arches became an early symbol of the brand.
Ray Kroc, a restaurant-equipment salesman, became interested in the concept after visiting the San Bernardino location in 1954. He partnered with the brothers and developed a franchising system built around standardized restaurant designs, procedures, and food preparation. In 1961, Kroc bought out the McDonald brothers’ interests and established McDonald’s System, Inc. The company expanded rapidly through franchised locations, making its name recognizable across the United States and internationally.
The menu expanded while the brand maintained its focus on quick, standardized meals. The Big Mac debuted in 1967, the Egg McMuffin was introduced in 1972, and the Chicken McNuggets arrived in 1983. Happy Meal, launched in 1979, was designed primarily as a children’s meal and became an important family marketing product. McDonald’s also introduced the Filet-O-Fish, Quarter Pounder, and a wide range of beverages and desserts.
Advertising became central to the company’s growth. “I’m Lovin’ It,” introduced in 2003, became one of the most recognizable restaurant slogans in the United States. Ronald McDonald, the company’s clown mascot, emerged in the early 1970s and became a prominent symbol in children’s advertising, school programs, and charitable campaigns. McDonald’s established Ronald McDonald House in 1974 to support families staying near hospitalized children.
The company’s headquarters moved to Oak Brook, Illinois, in 1971. It later expanded through international markets, including the opening of its first restaurant outside the United States in Canada in 1967 and its first location in continental Europe in 1986. Today, McDonald’s operates a vast global restaurant system whose menu and advertising remain closely associated with American popular culture, convenience, franchising, and standardized fast-food service.
