Osprey Games is the games imprint of Osprey Publishing, the Oxford-based illustrated-history publisher known for military-history books. Osprey Publishing became part of Bloomsbury Publishing in 2014. Osprey Games developed a catalogue spanning board games, card games, roleplaying games, and miniature wargames, often pairing historical subjects with approachable rules for players.

One of the imprint’s signatures is its use of designs rather than a genre. The catalogue includes games about historical warfare, fantasy skirmishing, science fiction, politics, and transportation. Osprey’s branding places designer names and subject matter prominently, while its books and games benefit from the parent company’s broad publishing background.

Frostgrave, written by Joseph A. McCullough, is a fantasy skirmish game published by Osprey Games in 2015. Players lead wizard-led bands through the frozen ruins of Felstad, recruiting soldiers and searching for treasure. Its campaign structure, small warbands, and use of miniatures made it an important release for Osprey Games.

Undaunted: Normandy, designed by Trevor Benjamin and David Thompson, is a two-player deck-building and board game set during 1944 Normandy campaign. Osprey Games published it in 2019. Each player commands American or German force, using cards to move units, seize objectives, and manage uncertainty. The series expanded after Normandy.

Gaslands, by Mike Hutchinson, turns toy cars into post-apocalyptic racing and vehicles. Osprey Games published the rulebook in 2017, presenting tables for hazards, weapons, sponsors, and teams. Rather than requiring a miniature range, the game encourages players to modify ordinary Matchbox- and Hot Wheels-sized cars, a choice central to its identity.

Ronin, written by Andrea Sfiligoi, applies skirmish-game rules to samurai warfare. Published by Osprey Games in 2013, it organizes forces into small retinues and covers clans, ashigaru, monks, and other historical troop types. The book’s format reflects Osprey’s crossover between illustrated military reference and playable tabletop systems, without requiring a large army.

Cryptid, designed by Hal Duncan and Ruth Veevers, is a deduction board game published by Osprey Games in 2018. Its players consult clues to locate a creature on a map, while secretly holding information that narrows the possible sites. Its tension comes from asking questions without exposing one’s clue.

Osprey’s catalogue shows a relationship between subject, mechanism, and format. Frostgrave makes fantasy portable; Undaunted translates an operation into cards and scenarios; Gaslands lowers the barrier for miniature conversion; Ronin distills an army into a skirmish force; and Cryptid demonstrates the imprint’s interest in deduction systems. These games define its identity today.
