TCGplayer is a Syracuse, New York-based marketplace focused on trading card games and related collectibles. Founded in 2008 by Chedy Hampson, it grew from a business serving hobby-game players into a major online destination for buying and selling individual cards, sealed products, supplies, and collectible items. Its catalog has prominently included Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Disney Lorcana, Flesh and Blood, and other tabletop game lines, alongside sports cards and other collectibles.
A defining feature of TCGplayer has been its marketplace model. Individual stores and sellers can list inventory, while buyers can compare prices and conditions across listings. The company’s product pages commonly provide market-price information, price histories, condition labels, and seller feedback. Its Price Guide became a notable resource for collectors seeking reference values for specific cards, including different printings, rarities, and variants.
TCGplayer also created programs designed to streamline fulfillment. TCGplayer Direct allows eligible sellers to send inventory to TCGplayer’s facilities; buyers can then combine qualifying purchases from multiple sellers into a single shipment fulfilled through the Direct program. The company has also operated seller tools and subscription offerings intended to help stores manage inventory, sales, and customer orders. These operational services distinguished it from a simple classified-listing site.
The company’s growth attracted the attention of eBay. In August 2022, eBay announced an agreement to acquire TCGplayer for approximately $295 million. The transaction closed on October 31, 2022, making TCGplayer part of eBay. eBay described the acquisition as a way to expand its position in the trading-card category, which had become an important area of collectible commerce.
TCGplayer has also been involved in a significant labor-development story within eBay. In March 2023, workers at TCGplayer’s Syracuse authentication center voted to form the TCGunion-CWA, affiliated with the Communications Workers of America. The vote was widely reported because it established a union representing workers at an eBay-owned facility in the United States.
Its identity remains closely tied to the practical details of the card hobby: card condition, set identification, rarity, market movement, packaging, and trust between buyers and sellers. Rather than functioning only as a retailer with a single inventory, TCGplayer has built its role around connecting a large network of hobby businesses and collectors. That structure helps local game stores reach customers beyond their immediate regions while giving players access to large quantities of singles and sealed products.
