Catalyst Game Labs is a Seattle-area tabletop game publisher best known for developing and publishing BattleTech and Shadowrun. The company emerged in 2007, when InMediaRes Productions acquired the BattleTech and Shadowrun properties from WizKids. Its first major releases under the Catalyst Game Labs name included new role-playing and tabletop products for both long-running settings. Rather than inventing those worlds, Catalyst took responsibility for extending game lines with new editions, sourcebooks, fiction, miniatures, and other play materials.
BattleTech is the science-fiction game of interstellar warfare created in the 1980s. Its setting centers on rival human powers, especially the Great Houses of the Inner Sphere, whose armies fight with heavily armed BattleMechs. Catalyst publishes the BattleTech: A Game of Armored Combat boxed set, rulebooks, maps, fiction, and supplements that cover different eras of the setting. Its BattleTech line also includes Alpha Strike, a faster tabletop rules system designed for larger battles, and the BattleTech role-playing game, which places characters in the same universe as the ’Mech battles. The publisher’s work has helped keep the setting’s extensive timeline and faction histories in active print.
Shadowrun combines cyberpunk and fantasy: corporate power, hackers, and advanced technology share a world with magic, dragons, and the return of mythical creatures. In the game, players portray “shadowrunners,” deniable operatives hired for dangerous work by corporations and other clients. Catalyst’s Shadowrun publications include the game’s Fifth and Sixth Edition rulebooks, setting guides, and adventures. These books develop the game’s distinctive near-future world, in which megacorporations wield enormous influence and characters use both digital networks and magic to pursue jobs.
Catalyst has also published other licensed and original tabletop games. Its titles include Leviathans, a miniatures game about aerial dreadnoughts in an alternate First World War, and Dragonfire, a cooperative deck-building game based on Dungeons & Dragons. The publisher has produced role-playing material for the fantasy setting of The Lord of the Rings through The One Ring line, including the second edition of The One Ring role-playing game and its supplements.
The company’s catalog reflects a focus on established fictional worlds and game systems that support continued play through expansions and new editions. Its products are distributed in formats ranging from boxed starter sets and miniatures to large, rules-heavy books. BattleTech and Shadowrun remain its most recognizable lines, linking Catalyst’s present-day publishing work to settings with decades of history, distinctive mechanics, and dedicated gaming communities.
