Edit reference

Paramount Pictures is a film studio founded in 1912, with a history shaped by filmmaking, distribution, and major theatrical releases. Zukor's company merged with Jesse L. Lasky's Feature Play Company in 1916, creating Famous Players–Lasky Corporation and a powerful studio. The Paramount name became associated with a mountain emblem, reportedly originally inspired by a doodle from artist W. W. Hodkinson. During the silent era, the studio distributed films featuring Mary Pickford, Rudolph Valentino, Gloria Swanson, and other major stars widely. Paramount's 1927 film Wings, directed by William A. Wellman, won the first Academy Award for Best Picture in 1929. The studio also released Sunset Boulevard in 1950, Billy Wilder's drama starring Gloria Swanson, William Holden, and Erich von Stroheim. Its 1954 adaptation of Rear Window, directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring James Stewart and Grace Kelly, became canonical thriller. Paramount's catalog includes The Godfather, released in 1972 and directed by Francis Ford Coppola from Mario Puzo's acclaimed 1969 novel. The Godfather won Best Picture, while its sequel, The Godfather Part II, became the first sequel to win that prize. In 1981, Paramount released Raiders of the Lost Ark, launching Indiana Jones with director Steven Spielberg and producer George Lucas. The studio distributed Forrest Gump in 1994, a Robert Zemeckis film that earned Tom Hanks Academy Award for Best Actor. Paramount became part of Viacom in 1994 after Viacom acquired the studio's parent, Paramount Communications, which had previously been Gulf+Western. After corporate reorganizations, Paramount Pictures became a film label within ViacomCBS, which changed its name to Paramount Global in 2022. Paramount Global's theatrical brands have included Nickelodeon Movies, whose releases connect the studio to family entertainment and animated filmmaking history. Recent Paramount films include Top Gun: Maverick, which surpassed one billion dollars worldwide and returned Tom Cruise to Pete Mitchell. The film received six Academy Award nominations, winning Best Sound, and became a defining theatrical success of 2022 for Paramount. In 2023, Paramount released Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, continuing its long-running collaboration with actor Tom Cruise internationally again. Paramount also maintains a television connection through Paramount Television Studios, established as Desilu Productions in 1950 and officially renamed in 1967. Its library spans silent features, prestige dramas, blockbuster franchises, horror, comedy, animation, and television properties across a century. That combination of historical depth and continuing production makes Paramount recognizable through specific titles, creators, performers, and enduring screen franchises.
