Witherbloom

Witherbloom is one of the five colleges of Strixhaven University, the magical school introduced in *Magic: The Gathering*’s 2021 set *Strixhaven: School of Mages*. Its discipline is the study of life and death. Rather than treating those subjects as opposites, Witherbloom’s magic draws on the movement of vitality between living things. The college is associated with black and green mana, and its founder is Beledros Witherbloom, an elder dragon who appears as a legendary creature card in the set.

Witherbloom’s setting distinguishes it from Strixhaven’s other colleges. Its campus occupies a swamp, an environment suited to students investigating growth, decay, anatomy, and the uses of living matter. Its mascots are Pests: small creatures that make the college’s interest in life cycles visible in both its illustrations and its game mechanics. A standard Witherbloom Pest token is a black and green 1/1 creature whose death gains its controller one life. The card *Pest Summoning*, for example, creates two such tokens. Their ability makes sacrificing creatures a practical expression of the college’s themes.

The college has two deans with contrasting approaches to its subject. Lisette, Dean of the Root, is represented on one side of a double-faced card; Valentin, Dean of the Vein, appears on the other. Lisette’s card rewards gaining life by strengthening creatures, while Valentin’s deals with creatures dying and can produce Pest tokens. Together, the two sides show how Witherbloom’s study encompasses both cultivation and extraction.

Several characters connect the college to Strixhaven’s story. Dina, Soul Steeper, is a Witherbloom student whose card links gaining life to opponents losing life. Professor Onyx teaches at Strixhaven under an assumed name; she is Liliana Vess, a longstanding *Magic* character whose identity becomes important in the Strixhaven storyline. Witherbloom also received a dedicated Commander deck, *Witherbloom Witchcraft*, released alongside *Strixhaven: School of Mages*. Its featured commander, Willowdusk, Essence Seer, turns life gained or lost into +1/+1 counters for a creature.

Across these appearances, Witherbloom has a specific identity within the fictional university. Its named founder, deans, students, mascots, campus, and cards all return to the same idea: vitality can be spent, restored, transferred, or transformed. That connection between setting and play is especially clear when a Pest dies to gain life, or when Dina turns that gain into damage to an opponent. Witherbloom’s life-and-death studies are therefore not just a description of its curriculum; they shape what its cards do.
