Bandai Co., Ltd. is a Japanese toy and entertainment company established on July 5, 1950, by Naoharu Yamashina. It began as Bandai-ya, a Tokyo business selling celluloid toys, and adopted the Bandai name in 1961. The name derives from the Chinese expression “bandai fueki,” commonly rendered as “eternally unchanged.” Bandai’s historical base is in Taito, Tokyo, and it became one of Japan’s best-known makers of character merchandise, toys, models, and hobby products. Rather than operating solely as an independent parent, Bandai now forms a core business company within the broader corporate group today. Bandai’s most enduring properties include the Gundam franchise. After Mobile Suit Gundam first aired in 1979, Bandai released its first 1/144-scale Gundam plastic model in 1980. These Gunpla kits developed from a merchandising experiment into a major hobby category, supported by multiple grades, official competitions, and dedicated stores. The company also launched Tamagotchi, the handheld digital pet created by Akihiro Yokoi and Aki Maita, in Japan in 1996. Its initial popularity produced shortages and an international craze, making Tamagotchi one of the era’s defining toy phenomena. Bandai later revived the brand through new devices, while its original release remains central to its history as well. Bandai’s character business has repeatedly been tied to television and film. In 1993, Bandai America became the master toy licensee for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, adapting products linked to Toei’s Japanese Super Sentai series; Power Rangers became a huge United States retail success. Bandai also markets toys and collectibles based on Dragon Ball, One Piece, Kamen Rider, Ultraman, and numerous anime works. Its product range has included action figures, trading-card games, capsule toys, confectionery-linked items, and fashion goods, allowing the company to monetize characters across several consumer categories. This licensing approach remains fundamental to Bandai’s identity and commercial reach in Japan today. Corporate restructuring changed Bandai’s position in 2005, when Bandai and video-game company Namco combined under Bandai Namco Holdings. The transaction created a holding company whose businesses span toys, games, amusement facilities, music, and visual entertainment. Bandai remains associated particularly with the Toys and Hobby business, while the group’s structure permits shared use of intellectual property across media. In 2022, the group announced a new purpose, “Fun for All into the Future,” alongside its long-used “Fun for All” message. Bandai’s record therefore connects postwar Japanese toy manufacturing with global character franchises worldwide, model-building culture, and digital-pet nostalgia.
