Disney began as the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio, founded in Los Angeles in October 1923 by Walt Disney and his brother Roy O. Disney. The company’s first major breakthrough was Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, an animated character created for Universal in 1927. After Walt lost the rights to Oswald, he and his artists developed Mickey Mouse. Mickey’s screen debut is commonly associated with Steamboat Willie, released on November 18, 1928, one of the earliest cartoons to use synchronized sound successfully. The studio expanded animation’s possibilities with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, released in 1937. It was the first full-length cel-animated feature produced by the studio and became a major commercial success despite doubts that audiences would watch an animated feature. Disney followed it with films including Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, and Bambi, establishing a body of work that shaped American animation. During World War II, Disney’s artists produced training films and propaganda for the United States government, while the studio also released package features such as Make Mine Music. In 1955, Walt Disney opened Disneyland in Anaheim, California. The park introduced themed lands, including Main Street, U.S.A., Adventureland, Fantasyland, and Tomorrowland, and became a model for later destination resorts. Walt Disney died in 1966, before the opening of Walt Disney World in Florida, which began operation in 1971. The company’s modern expansion includes the 1996 acquisition of Capital Cities/ABC, bringing the ABC television network and ESPN into Disney’s portfolio. In 2006, Disney acquired Pixar, the studio behind Toy Story, and in 2012 it acquired Lucasfilm, adding Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Disney purchased most of 21st Century Fox’s entertainment assets in 2019, including the film studio associated with Avatar and the X-Men franchise. Disney+ launched in November 2019, initially offering Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and National Geographic programming. The company’s Marvel Studios films, beginning with Iron Man in 2008, developed an interconnected cinematic universe that became one of the most commercially successful film franchises in history. Disney also operates theatrical distribution, television networks, streaming services, cruise lines, and parks worldwide. Its history therefore spans animation, filmmaking, broadcasting, hospitality, and branded entertainment, with Mickey Mouse, Disneyland, and its landmark films remaining central to the company’s identity.
