Paradox Interactive is a Swedish video game publisher and developer headquartered in Stockholm. The company was founded in 1999 and became publicly traded in 2016, when its shares began trading on Nasdaq First North in Stockholm. Paradox is especially associated with strategy games that cover long historical periods and let players reshape events through decisions in diplomacy, warfare, trade, politics, and administration. Its Europa Universalis series centers on early modern statecraft, while its games typically model many countries or factions at once. This design produces alternate histories rather than a single fixed campaign outcome for every player or every session. Paradox Development Studio, the company's internal development team, has created successive entries in Europa Universalis, Crusader Kings, Hearts of Iron, Victoria, and Stellaris. Crusader Kings makes medieval dynasties central, so marriage, inheritance, religion, and personal rivalries can change a realm as much as military campaigns. Hearts of Iron concentrates on the period surrounding the Second World War. Stellaris applies Paradox's systems to space exploration, alien species, empires, and galactic politics. Victoria 3 examines nineteenth century society, economics, political change, and population groups. These releases are regularly enlarged with updates and downloadable content, extending their rules, scenarios, and long term player communities. Paradox also publishes games made by external studios. Cities: Skylines, developed by Finland's Colossal Order and released by Paradox in 2015, became a major city building success and gained a large expansion catalog. Cities: Skylines II, released in 2023, was again developed by Colossal Order and published by Paradox. The company's other published games include Surviving Mars, created by Bulgaria's Haemimont Games, and BattleTech, developed by Harebrained Schemes. These partnerships place Paradox alongside developers with distinct specialties, from planetary colony management to turn based tactical combat, while the publisher supplies distribution, marketing, and continuing support for their releases across platforms. World of Darkness is another important Paradox property. Paradox acquired White Wolf Publishing in 2015, bringing the World of Darkness intellectual property under its control. Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines 2 uses that setting, which originated in tabletop role playing games. Paradox broadened internal development by acquiring the Netherlands based Triumph Studios in 2017. Triumph created the Age of Wonders series, and Paradox published Age of Wonders 4 in 2023. Across medieval rulership, early modern statecraft, industrial society, global war, science fiction, city building, and tactical combat, Paradox's catalog remains tied to systems heavy play, replayability, and evolving post release support rather than linear experiences.
