Reddit is an American social-media and discussion platform founded in 2005 by Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian. Aaron Swartz later joined the company after his startup, Infogami, merged with Reddit in 2006. The founders created Reddit as a site where users could submit links, discuss them, and collectively determine which posts received the most visibility. Its name is a wordplay on “read it,” reflecting the service’s original emphasis on discovering interesting web pages. Reddit organizes conversations into communities called subreddits. Each subreddit has its own name, moderators, rules, and subject matter. Some communities focus on broad interests, such as news, technology, sports, or entertainment; others are devoted to highly specialized topics, local communities, personal experiences, or recurring question-and-answer formats. Users can post links, images, videos, and text, then vote submissions and comments up or down. Reddit’s ranking system uses those votes, along with timing and other factors, to influence what appears in feeds and community listings. The company was acquired by Condé Nast, a division of Advance Publications, in 2006. Reddit later operated as an independent subsidiary of Advance. Steve Huffman returned as chief executive in 2015, after Ellen Pao served as interim CEO. Under Huffman, Reddit expanded its advertising business, introduced products such as Reddit Premium and awards, and invested in video, mobile applications, and community moderation tools. A major historical moment came in June 2023, when Reddit changed the pricing of access to its application programming interface. Many third-party applications said the new costs were unaffordable, and thousands of subreddit communities temporarily restricted access or became private in protest. The dispute led to the shutdown or transformation of several popular third-party clients and intensified debate about Reddit’s dependence on volunteer moderators and user-generated content. Reddit became a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol RDDT on March 21, 2024. Its initial public offering priced shares at $34, valuing the company at approximately $6.5 billion at the offering price. Reddit’s business combines advertising, premium memberships, virtual goods, licensing arrangements, and other commercial services. Its distinctive strength remains the large archive of public conversations shaped by pseudonymous users and moderated communities, although that model also creates persistent challenges involving misinformation, harassment, privacy, copyright, and platform governance. Reddit’s influence comes less from one editorial voice than from the accumulated activity of thousands of separate communities.
