The Straw Hat Crew is a pirate group led by Monkey D. Luffy in Eiichiro Oda’s manga and anime series One Piece. Luffy formed the crew in the East Blue after setting out to become Pirate King, a goal inspired by his childhood encounter with the pirate Shanks. The crew’s name comes from the straw hat Shanks gave Luffy, which Luffy treats as a treasured promise to return it someday. Roronoa Zoro joined first after Luffy saved him from execution at the Shells Town Marine Base. Zoro is the crew’s swordsman and seeks to become the world’s greatest swordsman. Nami, the navigator, joined after the defeat of the fish-man pirate Arlong, whose rule over her home, Cocoyasi Village, had forced her to create maps for him. Usopp became the crew’s sniper after helping defend Syrup Village from Captain Kuro. Sanji, a chef trained at the floating restaurant Baratie, joined after Luffy defeated Don Krieg and convinced him to pursue his dream of finding the legendary All Blue. Later members include Tony Tony Chopper, a reindeer doctor who ate the Human-Human Fruit; Nico Robin, an archaeologist and survivor of Ohara; Franky, a shipwright from Water 7; Brook, a musician revived by the Revive-Revive Fruit; and Jinbe, a fish-man helmsman and former Warlord of the Sea. Their ships have included the Going Merry and the Thousand Sunny, built by Franky and launched from Water 7. The crew’s conflicts repeatedly connect personal dreams with larger struggles. At Enies Lobby, they declared war on the World Government to rescue Robin, defeating CP9 agents and escaping aboard the Going Merry. At Sabaody Archipelago, the crew was separated by Bartholomew Kuma, leading Luffy to fight through Impel Down and Marineford while trying to save his brother Ace. After two years of training, the crew reunited and entered the New World. Their New World voyage included confronting the corrupt Caesar Clown on Punk Hazard, defeating Donquixote Doflamingo in Dressrosa, invading Big Mom’s territory during the Whole Cake Island incident, and helping liberate Wano from Kaido and the shogun Kurozumi Orochi. In Wano, Luffy’s awakening revealed the Nika-related nature of his Devil Fruit, and he defeated Kaido. By the Egghead Island events, the Straw Hats were directly opposed by powerful World Government forces while pursuing the truth surrounding the Void Century and the world’s hidden history. Their adventures combine comedy, loyalty, inherited will, and escalating opposition to the powers controlling the Grand Line.
