Power Pack

Power Pack is a Marvel Comics series about the Powers children: Alex, Julie, Jack, and Katie, four siblings from New York who become superheroes while trying to keep their dangerous double lives hidden from their parents, Dr. James Power and Maggie Power. The original ongoing title debuted in May 1984. It was created by writer Louise Simonson, then credited as Louise Jones, and artist June Brigman. The first series ran for 62 issues, ending in February 1991. The children receive their abilities after meeting a dying Kymellian named Aelfyre Whitemane, usually called Whitey. Whitey has been fighting the Snarks, an alien race responsible for destroying his home planet, Kymell. The Snarks pursue Earth because they want its resources, and Whitey gives the children powers so they can protect themselves and the planet. Alex becomes the eldest and nominal leader, using gravity-manipulating powers that allow him to control his own movement and lift or move objects. Julie can fly at great speed, leaving a rainbow-colored trail. Jack can alter his density, becoming either extremely heavy or nearly weightless. Katie can absorb energy and release it as powerful bursts. A central feature of the series is that the children are genuinely young, not simply adult superheroes drawn smaller. They deal with school, sibling rivalry, fear, grief, and the pressure of maintaining secrecy. Their parents care deeply for them but initially do not know that their children are Power Pack. The series also uses the children’s perspective to address serious subjects, including child endangerment, abuse, homelessness, and war, alongside science-fiction adventures involving alien threats. Power Pack’s link to the wider Marvel Universe is significant. Franklin Richards, the son of Reed Richards and Susan Storm of the Fantastic Four, is one of the team’s closest friends and appears frequently. The children also interact with the X-Men, the New Mutants, Spider-Man, and other Marvel characters. Issue #27, for example, ties into the “Mutant Massacre” crossover and places the young heroes amid the aftermath of the Marauders’ attack on the Morlocks. After the original series, Power Pack returned in miniseries, one-shots, and guest appearances. Marvel published several all-ages miniseries in the 2000s, including Power Pack: Day One, written by Marc Sumerak with art by Gurihiru. The team has also appeared in later continuity, including stories involving the Future Foundation. Their enduring identity comes from the unusual combination established by Simonson and Brigman: a family of children facing cosmic Marvel threats while still being recognizably brothers and sisters.
