D&D Beyond is the official digital toolset for Dungeons & Dragons, built around the fifth edition of the tabletop role-playing game. It combines searchable rules, character creation and management, digital versions of game books, and tools for Dungeon Masters. Rather than replacing the game’s books or its face-to-face play, the service makes rules and character information easier to find and update during a campaign.
The service launched in 2017, developed by Curse, a gaming community company then owned by Twitch. In 2018, Fandom acquired Curse’s media and community businesses, including D&D Beyond. The platform later became part of Wizards of the Coast: Hasbro announced its acquisition in April 2022, and the transition was completed that May. D&D Beyond is now operated by Wizards of the Coast, the publisher of Dungeons & Dragons.
A central feature is the digital character sheet. Players can create characters using options from the core rules and any eligible sourcebooks they own, then track abilities, hit points, equipment, spells, and other details. The builder can guide users through choices such as class, species, background, and ability scores. The sheet can also automate calculations and display information relevant to a character’s actions. Access to some character options depends on which books or content a user has purchased or unlocked.
For Dungeon Masters, D&D Beyond provides campaign spaces, encounter and monster references, and tools for sharing content with players. Its searchable compendium presents rules and book material in a format designed for quick lookup. The platform also supports digital dice rolling and, through its Maps feature, virtual tabletop play. These tools connect players’ character data with the rules and materials used to run sessions.
D&D Beyond’s relationship with Dungeons & Dragons publishing has changed over time. Its digital sourcebooks are licensed versions of official game content, not simply a general library of freely available rules. The 2024 revision of the fifth-edition rules was released in new Player’s Handbook and Dungeon Master’s Guide editions, with corresponding content and character options made available on the platform. As with earlier books, ownership and access depend on the specific digital products acquired and the service’s account terms.
The platform is also notable for its role in the game’s move toward integrated online play. Wizards of the Coast’s ownership brought D&D Beyond closer to the publisher’s digital plans, while the service retained its established functions for managing characters, campaigns, and purchased books. For players and Dungeon Masters, its defining purpose is practical: connecting official D&D rules and content to the ongoing work of building characters and running adventures.
