Bonsai is a tile-laying strategy game in which players cultivate miniature trees by drafting cards, acquiring tiles, and arranging branches, leaves, flowers, and fruit to create the most valuable bonsai.

Bonsai is a board game about cultivating a miniature tree, published by dV Games and designed for one to four players. It turns bonsai training into a competitive spatial puzzle: each player develops a tree, gathers resources, and tries to present the most valuable specimen in the Imperial Garden.

The market contains cards representing knowledge, tools, and techniques useful to a bonsai master. On a turn, a player can acquire a card from the display or cultivate the tree using abilities obtained. These choices create the game's tension: taking a stronger action may leave less time to expand the tree before scoring.

Tree growth is handled with physical pieces rather than a symbolic track. Players add trunk, branch, leaf, flower, and fruit elements to their bonsai, deciding where each piece fits. The shape matters: placement must respect the tree's structure, while a well-developed canopy can satisfy objectives and increase final value.

Cards do not provide points only. They can supply cultivation abilities, improve resources available to a player, or open a route toward scoring requirements. Because the market is a contested space, players watch one another's plans: a card ignored by one gardener may be exactly the combination another needs to complete a distinctive bonsai.

The game includes objective tiles that reward forms of achievement, so there is no ideal tree layout. A player may emphasize size, the arrangement of elements, or the completion of a goal. This keeps the visual result connected to the scoring system: the tree is both a construction and a record of strategic decisions.

Solo play changes the emphasis without changing the subject. Instead of competing with gardeners, one player works against the game's requirements and measures the bonsai against its objectives. Multiplayer play adds competition for market cards and opportunities, making timing important as players decide when to cultivate and when to continue developing their engines.

Bonsai's appeal comes from the match between theme and mechanism. The subject is not decorative: pruning-style decisions become placement, cultivation knowledge becomes card selection, and the finished miniature becomes evidence of the player's choices. Its premise also makes each addition consequential, since a crowded or poorly arranged tree can limit options.

That focus distinguishes the title from a generic game. Its play is about assembling a bonsai piece by piece, using cards from a display, pursuing objective tiles, and translating decisions into a tree. The winner is not the player with the plant, but the gardener whose construction meets the scoring demands.
