Crypton Future Media

Crypton Future Media is a Sapporo, Japan-based music technology company founded in 1995 by Hiroyuki Ito. Its early business included music-related mobile services, and it later became internationally known through software built around vocal synthesis. The company distributes audio products through its Sonicwire platform and develops tools for creators, but its most recognizable work is the character-oriented Vocaloid catalog that began with MEIKO in 2004. Crypton followed MEIKO with KAITO in 2006, then changed the scale of the project in 2007 by releasing Hatsune Miku, a voice-synthesis product whose presentation made the software’s fictional singer as important as its sound engine.

Hatsune Miku was released on August 31, 2007, for Yamaha’s Vocaloid 2 software. Her Japanese voice database was recorded from voice actor Saki Fujita. Crypton’s package and marketing identified the character as a sixteen-year-old virtual singer with turquoise twin tails, yet users could write the songs, program the vocal, and create artwork themselves. That open creative relationship proved central to Miku’s development. Songs by producers circulated through online communities, while illustrations, videos, remixes, and derivative stories expanded a single software release into a participatory culture. The company’s Piapro service became a place where creators could share work connected to its characters.

Crypton established rules intended to enable that ecosystem without abandoning control of the character identities. Its Piapro Character License permits certain noncommercial uses of designated Crypton characters, subject to stated conditions. The firm runs KarenT, a label and distribution service associated with music by Vocaloid creators. As Miku’s audience widened, Crypton supported concert presentations featuring projected animation and a band. The Hatsune Miku Expo concert-and-exhibition series took the character and participating creators to cities outside Japan, including events in North America and Europe. These performances demonstrate that Miku’s public presence is not confined to a desktop composition interface.

Although Hatsune Miku began as a Vocaloid 2 product, Crypton moved away from relying on Yamaha’s Vocaloid engine for its flagship characters. In 2013 it released Piapro Studio, a vocal-synthesis environment bundled with its Character Vocal Series products. Hatsune Miku V3 was among releases that used Piapro Studio while retaining compatibility with Vocaloid editing. The company’s catalog also includes Kagamine Rin and Len, Megurine Luka, MEIKO, and KAITO. This history makes Crypton unusual: it is simultaneously a software developer, a music distributor, and custodian of a character property whose songs, images, and performances have been created extensively by users.
