Cubicle 7 Entertainment is a tabletop roleplaying-game publisher founded in 2006 by Dominic McDowall. The company is associated with games that adapt recognizable literary, television, and fantasy settings into detailed roleplaying systems, rather than relying only on original generic worlds. Its catalogue has included licensed games based on Doctor Who, The Lord of the Rings, Warhammer, and Fighting Fantasy. One of Cubicle 7’s earliest major successes was the Doctor Who Roleplaying Game, originally published in 2009. The game used the BBC television series as its setting and allowed players to take the roles of the Doctor, companions, UNIT personnel, or other characters confronting alien threats and historical mysteries. Cubicle 7 later released multiple editions and supplements, including material connected with different eras of the television programme. The publisher also produced The One Ring Roleplaying Game, designed by Francesco Nepitello and Marco Maggi. First released in 2011, it focused on adventures in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth during the period between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The game emphasized travel, fellowship, journeys, and the psychological effects of confronting the Shadow. Cubicle 7 subsequently published Adventures in Middle-earth, a Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition adaptation of the same broad setting. Cubicle 7 became an important publisher for Warhammer roleplaying games. It released Warhammer Age of Sigmar: Soulbound, which brings the Mortal Realms of Games Workshop’s fantasy setting to a cooperative roleplaying format. The company also published the fourth edition of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay in 2018, returning players to the Old World’s grim, dangerous, and often darkly comic adventures. Supplements such as Middenheim: City of the White Wolf expanded that line with regional history, adventures, and setting information. Its original properties include Cthulhu Britannica, a range placing investigative horror inspired by H.P. Lovecraft in historical Britain, and the fantasy game Broken Weave. Cubicle 7 has also published games connected with Fighting Fantasy, including Warlock!, which draws on the old-school style associated with the Fighting Fantasy gamebooks created by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone. Rather than maintaining one universal house style, Cubicle 7’s products vary according to their settings. Its Doctor Who releases support cinematic investigation and changing genres, while Warhammer games foreground peril, corruption, and social satire. The One Ring emphasizes Tolkien-inspired travel and fellowship. This combination of licensed adaptations and distinctive original systems has made Cubicle 7 a prominent name in modern tabletop roleplaying publishing. Its games are distributed internationally through hobby stores, specialist retailers, and digital storefronts, with editions and product lines changing over time.
