EB Games is a video game retailer whose name originated with Electronics Boutique, a company founded in 1977 in the United States. Electronics Boutique began as a retailer of calculators, watches, and other electronic products before becoming strongly associated with computer software and video games. During the 1980s and 1990s, it expanded through shopping-centre stores and became a familiar specialist chain for console games, PC titles, accessories, and hardware.

In 2005, GameStop acquired Electronics Boutique in a transaction valued at approximately US$1.44 billion. The acquisition combined two major specialty videogame retailers and resulted in GameStop using the EB Games name in selected international markets. The EB Games brand has remained particularly prominent in Australia and New Zealand, where it operates as part of the GameStop corporate group.

EB Games Australia sells new and pre-owned video games, consoles, controllers, collectibles, clothing, and licensed merchandise. Its product range reflects major platform launches from companies such as Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft, while its stores are also known for taking pre-orders for highly anticipated releases. Trade-in activity has been a significant feature of the chain: customers can exchange eligible games, consoles, and accessories for store credit or other value, allowing pre-owned products to return to sale.

The Australian business has also developed a broader pop-culture retail presence. In 2014, EB Games introduced the Zing Pop Culture brand, initially through dedicated stores and later through in-store sections. Zing Pop Culture focuses on merchandise connected with games, films, television, comics, anime, and fandoms, including figurines, apparel, board games, and collectible items. This expansion reflected the commercial importance of licensed merchandise alongside traditional game sales.

EB Games has been involved in midnight launches, special-edition releases, and promotional events tied to major games. Such events have often offered customers the opportunity to collect pre-ordered titles at the beginning of release day. The retailer also operates the EB World customer loyalty program in Australia and New Zealand, which provides members with points and membership benefits under its published program rules.

The EB Games name has not been retained everywhere. In Canada, GameStop announced in 2021 that EB Games stores would be rebranded as GameStop, aligning the Canadian operation with the parent company’s global identity. Australia and New Zealand, however, continue to use the EB Games name, alongside Zing Pop Culture. Its history therefore links a 1977 American electronics retailer, GameStop’s 2005 acquisition strategy, and an enduring Australasian retail brand serving both videogame buyers and pop-culture collectors.
