Ottawa Senators

The Ottawa Senators are a professional ice hockey organization based in Ottawa, Ontario, and members of the National Hockey League’s Atlantic Division. The modern franchise began play in the 1992–93 season, returning NHL hockey to Canada’s capital after the original Senators franchise left the league in 1934. The organization takes its name from Ottawa’s earlier club, which was founded in the nineteenth century and became one of hockey’s most successful early teams.

The original Ottawa Senators won the Stanley Cup eleven times, including four championships awarded before the NHL was created in 1917. Their later NHL titles came in 1920, 1921, 1923, and 1927. The 1927 championship remains especially important because it was the franchise’s last Stanley Cup victory. That team, led by players such as Frank Nighbor, Cy Denneny, and Alex Connell, defeated the Boston Bruins in the Cup Final.

The current Senators played their first home games at the Ottawa Civic Centre before moving to the Palladium, now known as Canadian Tire Centre, in Kanata in 1996. Their first major period of success came in the late 1990s and 2000s. In 2003, Ottawa reached the Eastern Conference Final, where the New Jersey Devils eliminated the Senators. The club won the Presidents’ Trophy in 2002 after recording the NHL’s best regular-season record.

Ottawa reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007. The Senators defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins, New Jersey Devils, and Buffalo Sabres during the Eastern Conference playoffs, but the Anaheim Ducks won the Final in five games. Daniel Alfredsson served as captain during that run and became one of the most recognizable players in franchise history. The Swedish forward spent the majority of his NHL career in Ottawa, won the Calder Memorial Trophy as rookie of the year in 1996, and became the organization’s all-time leader in many offensive categories.

Other prominent Senators have included Chris Phillips, a defenseman who played 1,179 regular-season games for Ottawa; Jason Spezza, who captained the team and recorded 687 points as a Senator; and Erik Karlsson, a two-time Norris Trophy winner who established himself as an elite offensive defenseman in Ottawa. The franchise has also developed notable players through the draft, including captain Brady Tkachuk, selected fourth overall in 2018.

The Senators’ identity is closely tied to Ottawa’s bilingual, Canadian hockey culture, its historic connection to the Stanley Cup’s early years, and a passionate fan base that continues to follow the club through rebuilding periods and playoff ambitions.
