Scryfall

Scryfall is a web-based database and search engine for Magic: The Gathering cards, the trading-card game published by Wizards of the Coast. Its card pages bring together Oracle text, printings, legalities, rulings, prices, artist credits, collector numbers, finishes, languages, set information, and high-resolution card imagery. The service identifies individual printings with stable UUID-style IDs and represents cards through a documented public API. A central distinction on Scryfall is between a card object and a printing. A search for a card name can show many editions, while the "unique" search parameter can control whether results are grouped by cards, art, or prints. Its syntax supports field-specific queries such as `t:dragon`, `c:rw`, `o:flying`, and `set:lea`, alongside comparisons for mana value, power, toughness, dates, prices, and other attributes. Search operators include Boolean terms, negation, regular expressions for selected fields, and parentheses. The site also offers tagger-maintained art tags and user-facing searches such as "Random Card" and "Tagger." Scryfall carefully records Magic's rules-facing details. It exposes the current Oracle wording used for functional card text, color identity, mana cost, type line, keywords, all parts of multi-card objects, and format legality. Its rulings data is linked to individual cards and includes publication dates and ruling comments. It distinguishes transform cards, modal double-faced cards, split cards, meld cards, tokens, emblems, and other layouts that do not fit a simple one-faced card model. Developers can use Scryfall's REST API without an account for card lookup, autocomplete, catalog values, sets, rulings, symbols, and searches. API responses include image URIs when available, purchase URIs, related-card links, and pagination metadata. Scryfall also publishes downloadable bulk-data files, including default cards, all cards, Oracle cards, unique art, and rulings. Those files are intended for offline processing and update periodically; the bulk-data endpoint reports their update timestamps and download links. The database covers officially released Magic cards and many associated game objects, with set pages showing release dates, set codes, card totals, digital status, and iconography. It is especially useful for tracking the same game piece across reprints, promos, Secret Lair releases, Commander products, Masters sets, and digital-only releases. Scryfall's documentation asks users to respect rate limits, cache results, and provide a descriptive User agent when making API requests. It also notes that card images and underlying Magic intellectual property belong to their respective owners; access to its data and images does not grant ownership or reuse rights beyond applicable terms of service.
