Konami Group Corporation is a Japanese entertainment and technology company founded in 1969 by Kagemasa Kozuki in Osaka. It began as a business repairing and renting jukeboxes, then entered video-game manufacturing in the 1970s. The company’s name is formed from the surnames of its founders, Kagemasa Kozuki, Yoshinobu Nakama, and Tatsuo Miyasako.

Konami became internationally known through arcade games such as Frogger, released in 1981. Developed by Konami and licensed to Sega for distribution, Frogger became one of the era’s most recognizable arcade titles. The company also established major console franchises. Metal Gear, created by Hideo Kojima and first released in 1987 for the MSX2 computer, helped define stealth action through its emphasis on avoiding detection rather than defeating every enemy directly. Metal Gear Solid, released for the original PlayStation in 1998, expanded the series with cinematic presentation, voice acting, and elaborate espionage storytelling.

Another important Konami property is Castlevania, which began in 1986 with a Nintendo Entertainment System game known in Japan as Akumajo Dracula. The series became associated with gothic settings, vampire mythology, exploration, and challenging action. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, released in 1997 for PlayStation, was especially influential for combining open-ended exploration with role-playing elements.

Konami also created Silent Hill, a psychological horror series that debuted in 1999 on PlayStation. Unlike conventional action-focused horror games, Silent Hill emphasized atmosphere, psychological uncertainty, disturbing imagery, and symbolic narrative. Silent Hill 2, released in 2001, is widely regarded as a landmark in horror games because of its story about James Sunderland, who travels to the town after receiving a letter supposedly written by his deceased wife.

The company’s sports catalog includes Pro Evolution Soccer, known as Winning Eleven in Japan, and the long-running Power Pros baseball series. Konami has also operated the Yu-Gi-Oh! trading card game and digital game business, based on the manga and anime franchise created by Kazuki Takahashi.

Beyond games, Konami has businesses in gaming and systems, entertainment, and health-related equipment. Its arcade and amusement operations have produced rhythm games including Dance Dance Revolution, which became a global cultural phenomenon through its foot-operated dance platform. In 2006, the company changed its corporate name from Konami Corporation to Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. for its game publishing subsidiary, while the broader holding company became Konami Corporation. In 2015, the holding company adopted the name Konami Holdings Corporation, and in 2020 it changed again to Konami Group Corporation.
