Critical Role began as a private Dungeons & Dragons campaign among voice actors before its first public broadcast on March 12, 2015. The original cast featured Matthew Mercer as Dungeon Master, Marisha Ray, Ashley Johnson, Taliesin Jaffe, Liam O’Brien, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, and Sam Riegel. Their first campaign, Vox Machina, followed heroes who defended the fantasy continent of Tal’Dorei from threats including the Briarwoods, dragons, and Vecna. The show initially aired through Geek & Sundry, then moved to Critical Role’s independent channels after the company established its own media operation. In 2019, a Kickstarter campaign for an animated Vox Machina project raised more than eleven million dollars, vastly exceeding its original goal. That success led to The Legend of Vox Machina, an animated series produced by Critical Role Productions and Titmouse for Amazon Prime Video. The series premiered in January 2022 and adapts material from the campaign, while changing some details to fit a structured television narrative. Critical Role’s second campaign, The Mighty Nein, introduced a different adventuring party in the world of Wildemount, a setting developed for the show’s ongoing fiction. Its third campaign, Bells Hells, began in 2021 and connected new characters to Exandria, the broader world created and named in Mercer’s campaigns. Episodes are primarily streamed live on Thursdays, with edited video and podcast versions released later for audiences who prefer on-demand formats. The organization expanded beyond livestreams through publishing, live theater, animation, merchandise, and tabletop games. Its publishing work includes campaign settings and adventures, notably Tal’Dorei Campaign Setting Reborn and Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount, both created for Exandria’s expanding mythology. In 2021, the company launched Darrington Press, a tabletop publishing label named after Vox Machina’s halfling investigator, Taryon Darrington. Darrington Press has released games such as Uk’otoa, a competitive game inspired by a sea monster from The Mighty Nein. Critical Role also supports charitable giving through the Critical Role Foundation, which has partnered with organizations addressing humanitarian, environmental, and community needs. Its distinctive contribution is treating an improvised role-playing campaign as long-form serialized entertainment while preserving the players’ spontaneous decisions. The cast’s characters, including Vex’ahlia, Caleb Widogast, and Imogen Temult, have become recognizable figures across streaming, animation, books, and licensed games. Critical Role’s history therefore links a single home campaign to a creator-owned entertainment company with a substantial, interconnected fictional setting. Its work made Exandria familiar to audiences who may never have joined tabletop campaigns.
