Is Fortnite in PS VR2 Any Good? Our Quick Hands-On Verdict

Like many of you, I’ve been playing Fortnite on PS5 for years. So when I got the PS VR2 headset, I had one big question: Could this high-tech headset transform Fortnite into the ultimate immersive battle?

Fortnite has no official VR version. Epic Games hasn’t developed native PS VR2 support, meaning you won’t wield a virtual pickaxe or physically peek around structures

But I still wanted to see how far I could push the tech. So I tried Cinematic Mode, which is built into PS VR.

After spending about a week testing, here’s what I learned. If you're new to VR or just curious, this should help.

Getting It to Work: What You Need to Know

If you’re using just a PS5, the easiest way to try Fortnite in VR is with Cinematic Mode.

You just plug in the headset, go to Settings, and turn on Cinematic Mode at 120 Hz. It turns the headset into a floating screen in front of your eyes. You can also adjust the screen size and brightness.

It’s not full VR, but it still looks big and sharp. If you’re not into PC modding, stick to Cinematic Mode for now.

How It Looks and Feels

Cinematic Mode surprised me. Fortnite’s bold, colorful graphics look great on the PS VR2 screen. Here is what stood out:

Visual Splendor: PS VR2’s 4K HDR OLED panels make Fortnite’s colors explode. The greens of Weeping Woods feel rainforest-lush. metallic skins like Iron Man gleam with depth.

Zero Lag, Console Smoothness: Thanks to the PS5’s power, gameplay stays locked at 120 FPS in Performance Mode.

DualSense Integration: Adaptive triggers simulate shotgun recoil. During a monsoon firefight, rain pattered through the headset’s built-in rumble adding a surreal touch.

One thing that really impressed me was the audio. PS VR2 has 3D sound, and it works well in Fortnite. I could hear footsteps wrap around me and react faster than usual.

But remember—it’s still a flat screen game. You’re not inside the game. It just feels like watching Fortnite on a huge TV wrapped around your head.

Playing Comfortably: Controllers and Movement

In Cinematic Mode, you use the regular PS5 controller. That means everything works just like normal. If you’ve played Fortnite before, there’s no learning curve. Aim assist and movement feel the same.

But keep in mind beginners may get motion sickness after an hour of play. Sometimes I even lost track of where I was facing in real life. The headset has comfort options like snap turns, but if you get motion sick easily, I suggest playing in Zero Build mode first.

Does Fortnite Still Feel Like Fortnite?

Yes, mostly. The core loop—dropping in, looting, and fighting—is still the same.

In Cinematic Mode, skydiving and gunfights feel almost identical to regular play, just on a giant screen. There’s no added depth and PlayStation’s Cinematic Mode is like a giant 2D screen floating in a void. Think IMAX theater, not skydiving with a 360° view.

Tips for Beginners Trying VR Fortnite

● Start with the medium screen size in Cinematic Mode. Large screens look cool but can strain your neck.

● Always turn on 120 Hz mode for smoother visuals.

● Try Zero Build mode if you’re new. Fewer walls and ramps make it easier to focus.

● Turn off camera shake and flash effects in settings—they feel intense in VR.

● If you’re in a small room, activate the seated play area. It helps avoid bumping into stuff.

What About the Future?

Epic Games has said they’re not working on an official VR version of Fortnite right now. They think the game’s fast movement and building don’t work well in VR yet. But lots of players are interested, and gaming computer mods like UEVR show it’s possible.

If Epic ever greenlights native support, PS VR2’s tech could revolutionize the game. I hope they add:

● Eye-Tracking Aim: Glance at enemies to ADS. It's a lot faster than thumbstick flicks.

● Sense Controller Building: Physically swing pickaxes and be able to glance around corners.

● Haptic Environmental Feedback: Feel the slurp of a Chug Jug or the jolt of a Shockwave

Sony would also benefit. A big game like Fortnite would get more people to try VR compared to smaller titles.

Verdict: Worth A Try

Cinematic Mode on PS VR2 is a simple way to enjoy Fortnite on a big screen. Looks sharp and plays well. Not full VR, but still worth trying. If you own a PS VR2, definitely test Cinematic Mode. It’s easy and works right away.
